Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the Start, A Marcus (SMART WINNER) expressed concern over the action of the horse during its preliminary. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. When the gates opened, MEDIC CORPS bounded in the air and lost ground. Shortly after the start, SMART WINNER was checked severely, ONE STEP AHEAD and INSOCIABLE were crowded for room between GEM OF INDIA and KIDDYLAND which was carried in by TRIPLE EXPRESSO (Apprentice K T Yeung) which when hanging was being ridden along and shifted in away from THE DUKE (G Schofield) which itself was shifting in. Although the incident was one of some significance, the Stewards believed no one rider was fully responsible, therefore in the circumstances Apprentice Yeung was advised in a similar situation he would be expected not to ride his mount along and make a greater effort to prevent it shifting ground. G Schofield was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to exercise more care and ensure he is properly clear of other runners before shifting ground. For some distance after the 300 Metres, GEM OF INDIA had difficulty obtaining clear running initially between FLYING MACHINE and TRIPLE EXPRESSO, then shortly afterwards between FLYING MACHINE and THE DUKE which was shifting out. A Delpech (BLUE STITCH) said it had been his intention to follow GEM OF INDIA in the run. He said accordingly after beginning well he immediately came back to a position behind GEM OF INDIA, however, shortly afterwards BLUE STITCH was hampered when SMART WINNER which had been racing forward of it on its outside checked and shifted in. He said because of this BLUE STITCH raced much further back than was intended. He said on straightening he commenced to shift out in the hope of finding clear running, however, was unable to do so and therefore near the 300 Metres shifted to the inside of GREEN CHANNEL to continue going forward, but passing the 100 Metre mark BLUE STITCH commenced to hang out and for this reason he pulled his whip through to his left hand. He said BLUE STITCH then finished the race off nicely. The explanation submitted by A Delpech was accepted. SMART WINNER and GREEN CHANNEL were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of SMART WINNER and GREEN CHANNEL after the race did not show any significant findings. FLYING MACHINE, GEM OF INDIA, FIGURES and THE DUKE were sent for sampling.
