Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the Start, BULLSHOT was noted to have blood in its mouth. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said the horse was bleeding mildly from a tooth and in his opinion was suitable to race. BULLSHOT, which was standing badly, began awkwardly, shifted out and was steadied away from the heels of PEARL AND GOLD. LUCK AND FORTUNE began awkwardly, bumped the outside gate of its stall, then was checked away from the heels of PROFIT DAY which was shifting in. PREMIER BURG was slow to begin. Making the first turn, PRETTY DOUBLE, which was being steadied to shift in behind runners at the tail of the field to obtain cover, on several occasions was awkwardly placed close to the heels of LUCK AND FORTUNE. At the 600 Metres, BULLSHOT was steadied away from the heels of WORLD STAR, then dipped after the 600 Metres. Rounding the Home Turn, MONEY EXPRESS became unbalanced behind. On straightening, PRETTY DOUBLE was steadied away from the heels of SUPER BEST which was giving ground. After the 200 Metres, BULLSHOT was checked when disappointed for running inside MILLENNIUM LEGEND (Apprentice P H Lo) which when being ridden along shifted in as PROFIT DAY which was racing to its outside was also shifting in. Apprentice P H Lo was reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort to protect his fellow riders. A Delpech (PRETTY DOUBLE) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse midfield or a little behind. He said at the horse's last start, PRETTY DOUBLE raced in a forward position, but was caught wide and gave ground noticeably over the concluding stages. He said therefore it was decided tonight from the outside barrier it would be best to ride the horse more quietly. He said going into the first turn he realized he was again going to be caught wide and without cover, so he elected to steady and come back behind runners to race one off the rail with the rear. He said when being ridden this way tonight PRETTY DOUBLE finished the race off strongly. The explanation submitted by A Delpech was accepted. At the conclusion of the inquiry, A Delpech was reminded he was to continue to ride his mounts out to the end of the race. When questioned about the improved performance of PREMIER BURG, Mr C H Yip, the trainer of the horse, explained last start which was over 1400 Metres he had instructed W Smith to ride the horse in 3rd, 4th or 5th position with cover. He said on that occasion PREMIER BURG raced three wide outside OSCAR STAR and was unable to obtain any cover and gave ground quickly in the Straight. He said tonight he had instructed G Mossé again to ride the horse with cover which he was able to do and in his opinion this meant the horse was able to settle better and have a stronger finish. Mr Yip also pointed out PREMIER BURG had previously shown it is better suited when racing over distances of about 1600 Metres and in his opinion this also benefited the horse tonight. The explanation submitted by Mr Yip was accepted. F Coetzee (SUPER BEST) explained in the past the horse had performed best when able to race on the rail. He said tonight after beginning well he rode along into a forward position, however, MILLENNIUM LEGEND which had drawn inside him went forward with him, therefore he was unable to shift to the rail. He said SUPER BEST gave ground in the Straight. He said after the race the horse appeared sound in its action. F Coetzee said following the race he had discussed the performance of SUPER BEST with Mr A S Cruz, the trainer of the horse, and said consideration may be given to riding the horse more quietly at its next start. SUPER BEST was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, SUPER BEST was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. MONEY EXPRESS, PREMIER BURG and MILLENNIUM LEGEND were sent for sampling.
