Racing Incident Report
During the preliminary, Apprentice P H Lo was dislodged from NEW PLANET. The horse cantered a short distance to the Start riderless where it was re-captured and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. SILVERBIRD was slow to begin and then in the early and middle stages proved very difficult to settle. STRATEGIC SELECT was slow to begin and shortly afterwards was steadied away from the heels of STRONG SUN which shifted in. SUPER CHARGE began awkwardly. On jumping, TRIUMPHANT GLORY blundered. In the early stages, STRATEGIC SELECT and SPINNING CITY got their heads up on a number of occasions when proving difficult to settle. In the middle stages, SUPER IDEAL got its head up on a number of occasions when close to the heels of HEALTHY FRUITS. Prior to straightening, SILVERBIRD was steadied away from the heels of FREEBIRD which when laying out was steadied to avoid the heels of GOOD HEART (S Dye) which shifted in when not properly clear. In the circumstances, it was decided that S Dye should be severely reprimanded. In the Straight when being ridden out, HEALTHY FRUITS (W Smith) shifted ground on a number of occasions, near the 300 Metres shifted out abruptly and caused some inconvenience to SUPER IDEAL which as a result was steadied. Because of this, W Smith changed the whip into his left hand. HEALTHY FRUITS then shifted in abruptly. W Smith changed the whip back into his right hand. HEALTHY FRUITS then shifted out abruptly again and caused further inconvenience to SUPER IDEAL which was again steadied, then shifted back in and caused some inconvenience to SUPER CHARGE and GOOD HEART in the run to the line. For some distance after the 100 Metres, SPINNING CITY had difficulty obtaining clear running between ARMONDO and FREEBIRD which was inclined to be shifting out. T Mundry (ARMONDO) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse which had drawn the outside barrier with cover if possible. He said he anticipated SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT which had drawn to his inside would go forward and he elected to follow that horse across in the early stages and then at about the 1200 Metres steadied in the hope of obtaining cover behind FREEBIRD. He said he was not able to do so and was then obliged to remain racing three wide without cover for the remainder of the race. D Whyte (STRONG SUN) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a rearward position as in recent times it had not finished its races off when being ridden on the speed. He said last start when being ridden more quietly STRONG SUN closed its race off and it was felt to give the horse the best chance over the 1600 Metres it should be ridden in the similar manner today. SILVERBIRD was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of SILVERBIRD after the race did not show any significant findings. SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT and SUPER IDEAL were sent for sampling.
