Racing Incident Report
SING AND DRINK, which was fractious in the gates, began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped WADADELIGHT which as a result became unbalanced. On jumping, GOLDEN STRIDE, which was standing with its head turned to the left hand side, was steadied away from the heels of GREAT DRAGON after being carried out by HANDBAG FORTUNE. BETTER BOY began awkwardly and came together with BEAUTY PLUS. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT got its head on the side and shifted in away from SING AND DRINK which shifted in when only just clear. At the 900 Metres, WADADELIGHT became unbalanced. After the 800 Metres, GOLDEN STRIDE was steadied when momentarily awkward inside the heels of DRAGON STRIDE. GOLDEN STRIDE then made the turn at the 600 Metres awkwardly and became unbalanced. A Marcus (DRAGON STRIDE) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 200 Metre he failed to take sufficient measures to prevent his mount shifting in when not clear of GOLDEN STRIDE, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. In the circumstances of this case, it was decided the appropriate penalty was for A Marcus' licence to ride in races be suspended until Thursday 8 January 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Saturday 20 December 2003. After the 200 Metres, WINNING ATTORNEY, which was giving ground, was momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of HANDBAG FORTUNE which shifted to the inside of SING AND DRINK to go forward. When WINNING ATTORNEY was steadied, some inconvenience was caused to GOLDEN STRIDE which was checked and shifted out. For some distance approaching and passing the 150 Metres, DRAGON STRIDE was held up and unable to obtain clear running behind CHOICE AND CHANCE which was giving ground. C Williams (HANDBAG FORTUNE) said the horse travelled around midfield with cover as anticipated. He said he had been instructed to ensure if possible to race close to the rail, however, he was obliged to race two wide in the run behind SING AND DRINK and to the inside of EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT. He said HANDBAG FORTUNE had a tendency to over-race in the middle stages and would not relax. He said on straightening SING AND DRINK and EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT shifted out and quickened, however, his mount initially did not respond to his riding as he had hoped and therefore he was unable to secure the run which had presented itself between SING AND DRINK and EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT. He said approaching the 200 Metres HANDBAG FORTUNE had started to close off the race, however, EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT had commenced to shift in towards SING AND DRINK, he therefore elected to shift to the inside of SING AND DRINK to ensure his mount had uninterrupted running in the run to the line. The explanation submitted by C Williams was accepted. GREAT DRAGON was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, GREAT DRAGON was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. HANDBAG FORTUNE, BEAUTY PLUS and EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT were sent for sampling.
