Racing Incident Report
After being boxed, BY INSTINCT became fractious and broke through, then travelled a short distance before being restrained. BY INSTINCT was returned to the Start, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. SEASONS KNACK was slow to begin. FAT CHANCE began awkwardly. CHINOOK was slow to begin, then shortly afterwards was steadied away from the heels of CORAJOSO. Near the 1400 Metres, BY INSTINCT was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between LATTE and ASALI which was racing tight inside CZAR OF PRUSSIA. After the 1400 Metres, when racing without cover ASALI proved difficult to settle, then went forward and crossed to the lead near the 800 Metres. Near the 800 Metres, BY INSTINCT was crowded for room between LATTE and CHINOOK which momentarily shifted in. At the 700 Metres, HIGH SKY was steadied away from the heels of BY INSTINCT which was racing tight inside CHINOOK. For some distance approaching and making the Home Turn, SEASONS KNACK was held up and unable to improve when behind LATTE which was commencing to give ground. For a considerable distance after the 200 Metres, BY INSTINCT, which had its head on the side and was inclined to be laying in, was held up and unable to improve when racing close to the heels of SUGAR AND SPICE. After the 200 Metres, HIGH SKY was steadied and shifted to the inside of BY INSTINCT to continue going forward. H K Yim (FAT CHANCE) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the 100 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of TEMMOKU, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked which in turn caused crowding on its inside to CHINOOK. H K Yim was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 4 December 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday 19 November 2003. Prior to the winning post, CZAR OF PRUSSIA, which was giving ground, was steadied when crowded for room between SEASONS KNACK which was taken out slightly by BOLD VISION and SUGAR AND SPICE which got its head on the side and shifted in away from FAT CHANCE which shifted in when only just clear. S Dye (LATTE), which was having its first start on the All Weather Track, said the horse performed poorly due to it not handling the surface. He said LATTE did not have enough speed to lead in today's race and when racing in behind appeared to resent the kickback. LATTE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, LATTE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. HOLY QUEST was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. Following the race, HOLY QUEST was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said the horse was making an abnormal breathing noise. An endoscopic examination was carried out which showed the horse to be a "roarer". FAT CHANCE and BOLD VISION were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 17 November 2003)
BY INSTINCT was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C S Shum yesterday. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, BY INSTINCT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
