Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, MR BEAUTIFUL was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. The horse was trotted up and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. OSCAR STAR was slow to begin. TOUCH DOWN began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. MR BEAUTIFUL began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall, then stumbled. KING OF THE TURF and ZERUBBABEL which had drawn the two outside barriers, were immediately steadied on jumping and shifted across behind runners to a position close to the rail. After the 800 Metres, COUNTRY DRAGON was bumped by OSCAR STAR. At the 700 Metres and again at the 600 Metres, COUNTRY DRAGON was steadied to avoid the heels of ELEGANCE which momentarily shifted out to a three wide position, then shifted back in slightly. Approaching the 200 Metres, KING OF THE TURF, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied and shifted to the outside of THE RICH MAN to go forward. When KING OF THE TURF shifted out, some inconvenience was caused to MAXIMUM JOY which was giving ground. Approaching and passing the 200 Metres, TOUCH DOWN had difficulty obtaining clear running between ELEGANCE and MR PRESIDENT. W Smith (THE RICH MAN) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position, ideally in the first three. He said in accordance with those instructions he rode forward vigorously from the start, however, MAXIMUM JOY went forward with him on his inside and LONGMARK as anticipated held the fence to lead. He said after passing the winning post on the first occasion he looked to his inside to see if he was clear to shift in to obtain a position behind MAXIMUM JOY, however, ELEGANCE and MR PRESIDENT were racing to his inside which meant he was obliged to remain racing in a three wide position. He said he realized the first section of the race had been run in relatively quick time and then shortly after entering the Back Straight when MAXIMUM JOY dropped back he shifted across to race beside LONGMARK. He said when he did this the tempo of the race steadied and THE RICH MAN travelled comfortably for him and at this stage the horse gave him the feel that it would be in the finish. He said THE RICH MAN responded in the early part of the Straight to reach the lead, however, approaching the 200 Metres commenced to give ground quickly. Mr T K Ng, the trainer of THE RICH MAN, confirmed the riding instructions issued to W Smith and said while the horse would be better suited if ridden a little quietly in the early stages, he was satisfied in the circumstances of tonight's race with the riding of W Smith. W Smith was advised his explanation would be noted. S K Sit (LONGMARK) said he had been riding the horse in its work leading into tonight's race and the horse had shown "very good form". He said while he is aware LONGMARK does not race best when challenged in the lead he was unable to say that this caused the horse to perform as poorly as it did tonight, however, he was unable to offer any explanation for the performance. The performance of LONGMARK was considered unacceptable. Before the horse will be permitted to race again, it will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. LONGMARK was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of LONGMARK after the race did not show any significant findings. MR BEAUTIFUL and KING OF THE TURF were sent for sampling.
