Racing Incident Report

After being placed in the barrier, GOLDEN MAPLE broke through riderless and then completed a full circuit of the track. Acting on veterinary advice that GOLDEN MAPLE was not suitable to race, the Stewards ordered the horse to be withdrawn. Before being permitted to race again, GOLDEN MAPLE will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. FLORAL DANCER began awkwardly and bumped the inside of its gate. FAT CHANCE was slow to begin. DOLBRIDGE, which was standing badly, was slow to begin. A BETTER DRAGON began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped QUICK NEWS. Shortly after the start, DONGGUAN EXCELS and TELECOM BABE were steadied when crowded for room between TUSITALA and JUST TOO GOOD, both of which shifted ground. In the early stages, TUSITALA proved very difficult to settle and on a number of occasions got its head up. At the 1200 Metres, FAT CHANCE was checked when crowded for room by DONGGUAN EXCELS which was taken in by TUSITALA which when proving difficult to settle got its head up and shifted in abruptly away from the heels of LIGHT FOOT (A Delpech) which itself shifted in slightly when not clear. In the circumstances, A Delpech was severely reprimanded. Prior to straightening, DONGGUAN EXCELS was disappointed for running when endeavouring to improve between JUST TOO GOOD and LIGHT FOOT. Apprentice C K Tong (DONGGUAN EXCELS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that near the 200 Metres he shifted his mount out when not clear of TUSITALA, causing that horse to lose its rightful running, clip the heels of DONGGUAN EXCELS and fall [Rule 100(1)]. A BETTER DRAGON, which was racing to the outside of TUSITALA, was hampered and as a result its rider, Apprentice P H Lo, became unbalanced and was dislodged. JADE RUYI, which was following TUSITALA, was severely hampered as it endeavoured to clear the fallen rider and then was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. In the circumstances of this case, bearing in mind the consequential effects but also having consideration for Apprentice C K Tong's relative inexperience and his forthright manner throughout the inquiry, it was decided the appropriate penalty was for Apprentice C K Tong's licence to ride in races be suspended for a period to expire on Thursday 23 October 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (5 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Wednesday 1 October 2003. After the race, Apprentice P H Lo was examined by the medical officer. He said he was fit to fulfil his remaining riding engagements. D Whyte (TELECOM BABE) pleaded guilty to a charge of having failed to ride his mount out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards and was fined the sum of $20,000 [Rule 100(2)]. BROWN BEAUTY, LIGHT FOOT and DONGGUAN EXCELS were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported DONGGUAN EXCELS had sustained a laceration to its right hind fetlock.

DONGGUAN EXCELS was again examined at the stables of Trainer D A Hayes by the Senior Veterinary Officer yesterday and at this time was noted to have a swollen left hock and a wound to the right hock.
