Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, it was noted ABLE MARS had shifted its right hind plate. This plate was reset prior to the horse being loaded, resulting in a delay to the start of the race. FAST RUNNER began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. FIRST KNIGHT was slow to begin. On jumping, DRAGON'S ERA shifted out. This caused crowding on its outside to BARFOLD HERO and OSCAR STAR. M Cahill (BARFOLD HERO) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 200 Metres he shifted his mount out when not clear of BLESSINGS' PARTNER, causing that horse to be carried out across the rightful running of ABLE MARS which as a result was checked. M Cahill's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to expire on Sunday 8 June 2003 on which day he may resume race riding. The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday 28 May 2003. K C Tsang (JUSTINIAN) was reprimanded for making a celebratory gesture just prior to the winning post. M Cahill (BARFOLD HERO) explained the horse had always shown a preference for making its run on the outside of runners in the Straight. He said because of this early in the Straight he elected to follow UNIVERSAL STAR out away from the fence to obtain running as he was of the opinion that horse would carry him into the race instead of improving on the inside of FAST RUNNER where there was an opportunity to do so. C Williams (CAPITAL GAIN) said when the horse won at its most recent start from an outside gate, he immediately restrained it and took it back to a rearward position as he was concerned if it was allowed to stride forward from the gates, it would over-race which it had done in the past. He said today from a better barrier, the intention was to have the horse somewhere about midfield. He said CAPITAL GAIN began well, he immediately tried to steady his mount and allowed runners from the outside to cross, however, when no other runners crossed him to provide cover, he continued to race in the lead without applying pressure to his mount as was shown by the slow tempo of the race. D Beasley (DRAGON'S ERA) said he had been told by the trainer from a wide barrier that the horse would not have sufficient early speed to cross runners drawn to its inside. He said because of this he was instructed to ride DRAGON'S ERA quietly in the early stages and ensure it was not forced to race wide in the hope that it would finish the race off strongly. He said after beginning awkwardly, he immediately restrained DRAGON'S ERA in an attempt to carry out the instructions issued to him. He said at the 1200 Metres whilst racing towards the rear, he was still racing four wide outside KING CONFIDENT and he therefore elected to further steady DRAGON'S ERA to shift across behind runners to the rail but at the rear. He said DRAGON'S ERA finished the race off nicely, particularly having considered the tempo of the race did not suit back markers. Trainer D A Hayes confirmed the riding instructions issued to D Beasley. Trainer P Chapple-Hyam (JUSTINIAN) was unable to offer any explanation for the horse's improved performance. He said since the horse's last race, he had backed off its work and it had only cantered in the mornings. He said the improvement was not anticipated and accordingly he had advised the owners that he at best gave the horse only an outside chance. BARFOLD HERO, JUSTINIAN and TREASURE FIELD were sent for sampling.
