Racing Incident Report
While parading prior to the race, HOROSCOPE loosened its right front plate. The horse was returned to the saddling stalls and had this plate tightened. HOROSCOPE was trotted up by the Veterinary Surgeon and considered suitable to race. After arriving at the Start, HOROSCOPE was again examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. DESERT STORM, HOROSCOPE and CHINOOK were slow to begin. On jumping, SUN SHINE RIVER got its head up. TRICCOLO began awkwardly. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, EVER SUCCESS became unbalanced and shifted out. This caused some crowding to STRONGHEART. GOOD RECORD, which was following, was steadied in consequence. At the 600 Metres, DESERT STORM was disappointed for running between GOOD RECORD and TOM'S FIRST. At the 300 Metres, STRONGHEART, which was giving ground, was steadied away from the heels of TRICCOLO which was also giving ground. Also at the 300 Metres, EVER SUCCESS was shifted to the outside of JOYFUL SPIRIT to obtain clear running. At the 200 Metres, MARK OF EXCELLENCE was shifted to the outside of JOYFUL SPIRIT to obtain clear running. Throughout the race, TOP PRIZE hung out. G Schofield (TRICCOLO) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in a handy position with cover if possible. He said in the early stages he worked across from his wide draw with JOYFUL SPIRIT in the hope of finding cover, however, when JOYFUL SPIRIT obtained a position behind ENTERTAINING with cover, it meant he was obliged to race three wide and without cover on its outside as he was not able to go back further in the hope of finding cover because RIVER CENTAINE was racing behind him and three wide. He said he continued to race in this three wide position just off the lead until after the 600 Metres and at that point commenced to ride TRICCOLO along in an endeavour to hold its position. He said however when he did this, TRICCOLO shifted out slightly near the 500 Metres and this enabled JOYFUL SPIRIT to improve through on his inside into the clear outside the leaders. He said after straightening TRICCOLO gave ground. G Schofield was told to ensure he should at all times ride in a competitive manner, particularly at vital stages of the race. RIVER CENTAINE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of RIVER CENTAINE after the race did not show any significant findings. JOYFUL SPIRIT and MARK OF EXCELLENCE were sent for sampling.
