Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the Start, A Marcus (ENTERTAINING) sought to have the horse examined by the Veterinary Surgeon as in his opinion it did not feel right in its action. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon, trotted up and after the necessary consultations considered suitable to race. GOLD FIELD was slow to begin. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, MAGICAL WARRIOR and MY CHIEF raced tight. From the outside barrier, HAPPY CONTENDER was ridden in a forward position, but was obliged to race wide and without cover. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, MY CHIEF hung in. Shortly after straightening, GOLD FIELD was steadied away from the heels of MY CHIEF which shifted in abruptly. When questioned regarding the improved performance of COMMANDER CHARLIE, Trainer D Oughton said the horse has a history of leg problems and of recent times has been racing on solid tracks. He said in his opinion COMMANDER CHARLIE appreciated racing on the "forgiving" surface tonight. He said prior to the race he instructed Apprentice M W Leung, the horse's rider, to allow the horse to travel where it was comfortable and tonight after beginning well, this meant the horse raced in a more forward position than is usual. Mr Oughton pointed out the horse's most recent performance was its first start on the All Weather surface and it did not handle this. Mr Oughton said COMMANDER CHARLIE's previous races were of a higher class than that which it competed tonight. Mr Oughton's explanations were accepted. C Williams (STRONGHEART) said he had been instructed by Mr J Moore, trainer of the horse, to ride the horse in a rearward position tonight. He said he believed this was because of the horse's wide barrier. He said in accordance with this instruction, after STRONGHEART had begun well, he rode it quietly in the early stages and allowed it to get back. He said when he hoped to commence improving his position after the 700 Metres, he was awkwardly placed behind MADE TO FIGURE and that horse was not able to carry him forward, then when placed under pressure after straightening STRONGHEART responded only fairly. CLASSA WIN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, CLASSA WIN was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. COMMANDER CHARLIE and BOBO DUCK were sent for sampling.
