Racing Incident Report
On jumping, TUSITALA shifted in abruptly and bumped JOYFUL STAR. Also on jumping, SCENIC STAR and DONGGUAN EXCELS bumped. SUNNY DESERT was slow to begin. Near the 1400 Metres, WINNING FIESTA got its head on the side and shifted in away from JUSTINIAN. In the middle stages, WINNING FIESTA got its head on the side and shifted in away from the hindquarters of IN THE MONEY. This caused crowding to DONGGUAN EXCELS on several occasions. After the 800 Metres, TUSITALA was awkwardly placed close to the heels of DONGGUAN EXCELS. On straightening, MEHBOOB THE THIRD was carried wider by RICARDO which shifted out to find clear running. At the 400 Metres, THE FACULTY, which was giving ground, was steadied to avoid the heels of JOYFUL STAR which shifted out. After the 400 Metres, REAL WINNER got its head on the side, commenced to hang in and shifted ground abruptly, obliging H K Yim, its rider, to stop riding and straighten his mount. After this, REAL WINNER continued to hang in, proved difficult to ride and then over the concluding stages shifted out. Near the 200 Metres, SUNNY DESERT shifted out and brushed the hindquarters of SHANGHAI FRIEND (D Dunn) which as a result was turned inwards slightly. D Dunn then continued to ride SHANGHAI FRIEND along and caused crowding on his inside to SUNNY DESERT which as a result was carried in and then was changed course to the inside of REAL WINNER to obtain clear running. In the circumstances, D Dunn was reprimanded and advised in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion. When SUNNY DESERT was carried in, some inconvenience was caused to JOYFUL STAR. At the 100 Metres, SUNNY DESERT was steadied away from the heels of REAL WINNER. When questioned, Trainer K L Man was unable to offer any explanation for the improved performance of REAL WINNER. He said since REAL WINNER won on the All Weather surface last season, its form had been most disappointing both on race day and in track work. He said H K Yim had been riding the horse in most of its work and he had not been able to give any positive reports on the horse's work. Mr Man said based on this he had informed the owner of REAL WINNER it had at best an outside chance in today's race. The only possible explanations Mr Man was able to give were that the horse had been dropping noticeably in the ratings and that it appeared to appreciate today's track surface. Mr Man was advised where possible he should ensure REAL WINNER now continues to race with some consistency. IN THE MONEY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. Following the race, IN THE MONEY, which was making an abnormal breathing noise, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination was carried out. This showed the horse to be a "roarer" as has previously been reported. DONGGUAN EXCELS, REAL WINNER and SHANGHAI FRIEND were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted both WINNING FIESTA and THE FACULTY had bled from both nostrils.
