Racing Incident Report
PRETTY TRIO was slow to begin. BELLAGIO began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall. This caused the left foot of B Prebble, its rider, to shift in the stirrup which he repositioned shortly after the start. On jumping, STEP FORWARD, which had drawn the outside gate and was to be ridden quietly today, got its head up. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, TOP QUALITY was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between JUST IN TIME and MULTIPERFECTION. Near the 1200 Metres, MIGHTY HUGO, which had been obliged to race wide and without cover from an awkward gate, was held wide when TOP QUALITY shifted out on its inside to improve. After this, MIGHTY HUGO continued to race wide without cover for the remainder of the race and in the Straight gave ground. Near the 700 Metres, BELLAGIO was steadied when disappointed for running inside HURRY UP, then near the 500 Metres was carried wider when HURRY UP shifted out to improve. F Coetzee (MULTIPERFECTION) said he had not been riding the horse in its recent work, however, he was aware the work the horse had done had been good. He said he was instructed to ride the horse in a forward position and accordingly he rode it along in the early stages to travel behind the speed, however, at no stage was MULTIPERFECTION, which was having its first start on the All Weather Track, comfortable on the surface and he attributed the horse's poor performance solely to this. K H Ting (TOP QUALITY) explained when he placed his mount under pressure prior to straightening, it became unbalanced and he was concerned with its action, therefore he did not ride it out in the Straight as he normally would. TOP QUALITY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, TOP QUALITY was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. Before TOP QUALITY can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. PRETTY TRIO, GOOD WIN and HURRY UP were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted JUST IN TIME has sustained a small laceration to the right hind cannon.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 7 Apr. 2003) :
After the race, TOP QUALITY, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. TOP QUALITY was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C H Yip this morning and was found to be lame in the left fore leg.
As previously advised, TOP QUALITY will be required to pass an official veterinary examination before racing again.
