Racing Incident Report

HIMALAYA was slow to begin. On jumping, JOYFUL SPIRIT got its head up. From a wide barrier, HELENE MOMENTUM was immediately steadied on jumping to race in a rearward position. In the early stages, SUPER BLITZ raced wide and without cover. In the early and middle stages, EQUATOR KID proved difficult to settle. After the 1400 Metres, ELEGANT FASHION commenced to over-race. At the 1200 Metres, HIMALAYA shifted out after being bumped by BOWMAN'S CROSSING. Because of this, HIMALAYA was obliged to cover extra ground. After the 1200 Metres, RIVER DANCER was obliged to race four wide and without cover. Just prior to straightening, FANTASY was steadied and shifted in when disappointed for running between JAZZ BEAT and GIFT. For some distance after straightening, BEVERLY GREEN was held up and unable to obtain clear running initially behind GOLDEN YEARS and JOYFUL SPIRIT which was giving ground, then afterwards behind GOLDEN YEARS and EQUATOR KID. To obtain a clear run at the 200 Metres, BEVERLY GREEN was shifted out. Near the 100 Metres, GOLDEN YEARS, which was giving ground, was momentarily crowded by EQUATOR KID which got its head on the side and shifted in. When questioned regarding the poor performance of BOWMAN'S CROSSING, D Whyte was unable to offer any explanation. He said he enjoyed a good run throughout the race following ELEGANT FASHION and on straightening elected to shift out into clear running, however, when placed under pressure, BOWMAN'S CROSSING did not quicken. He said following the race BOWMAN'S CROSSING appeared sound in its action and he was unaware of anything being amiss with the horse. Mr D Oughton, trainer of BOWMAN'S CROSSING, said the horse's preparation into today's race had been good. He pointed out today was BOWMAN'S CROSSING's first time racing over 2000 Metres, however, he did not feel this could explain the horse's poor performance. Mr Oughton said he had examined BOWMAN'S CROSSING following the race and the horse appeared normal to him and he was unable to explain its performance today. BOWMAN'S CROSSING was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, BOWMAN'S CROSSING was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was displaying a heart irregularity. Before being permitted to race again, BOWMAN'S CROSSING will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ELEGANT FASHION and SELF FLIT were sent for sampling.
