Racing Incident Report
SMILEY WIN, HENNESSY STAR and MILLENNIUMTREASURE were slow to begin. SCHOLARSHIP, which was a little slow to begin, was bumped shortly after the start by MUNDAHISH which shifted in. At the 1000 Metres, MILLENNIUMTREASURE was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of SCHOLARSHIP which in turn was awkwardly placed inside the heels of MUNDAHISH. After the 400 Metres, HENNESSY STAR was steadied when crowded for room between FOREVER HERO and MUNDAHISH which when making the turn hung out and shifted ground at this point. J Spencer (MILLENNIUMTREASURE) was fined $2,000 for returning after the race 2 lbs over his declared weight. He had weighed out to ride MILLENNIUMTREASURE at 118 lbs and returned to scale following the race at 120 lbs. C Soumillon (ACE OF PACE) explained he had been instructed by Mr P F Yiu, trainer of the horse, to ensure it began well and raced in 2nd or 3rd position behind the leader if possible. Mr Yiu explained while ACE OF PACE had been racing in rearward positions at its last two starts, the instructions on each occasion had been the same as tonight and that was to race in a forward position. He said last start O Doleuze explained to him the horse began only fairly and did not show sufficient pace to take up the forward position as intended. Mr Yiu said he was satisfied with the manner in which O Doleuze had been riding ACE OF PACE and he would have engaged him to ride the horse again tonight if he were not suspended. He said since the horse last raced on 11 December 2002, his work had been steady with its last serious track gallop being about 10 days ago. He added since that gallop he allowed ACE OF PACE to freshen up a little and as a result the horse had gained in its body weight. The explanations submitted by Mr Yiu were accepted. D Whyte (HENNESSY STAR) said his mount began better than usual and because of this he was able to obtain a nice position in the run. He said HENNESSY STAR travelled satisfactorily until about the 400 Metres where it was steadied as a result of being inconvenienced. He said after this HENNESSY STAR gave ground and did not respond to his riding. He added while he had ridden FORTUNE MAPLE when it won at its last start, he was not available to ride the horse tonight as he had a long standing commitment to HENNESSY STAR when it next raced. He said he had ridden HENNESSY STAR in its recent work which in his opinion was good and he expected the horse to be competitive tonight. He was unable to explain the poor performance of HENNESSY STAR and added in the circumstances of tonight's race the inconvenience he received at the 400 Metres was of little significance. HENNESSY STAR was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, HENNESSY STAR was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. ACE OF PACE and FORTUNE MAPLE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 9 Jan. 2003) :
After this race, HENNESSY STAR, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. HENNESSY STAR was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer this morning at the stables of Trainer K W Lui. It was reported the horse was showing stiffness together with muscle soreness in both hind legs.
Before HENNESSY STAR can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
