Racing Incident Report

POWERFUL began awkwardly. OH GREAT and PROFIT TREASURE were slow to begin, then shortly after the start lost further ground when crowded by HIGH HILL FOREST which shifted in abruptly. After the 500 Metres, PEARL AND GOLD and SKY HAWK raced tight. Just prior to straightening, AFFAIRE D'AMOUR, which was giving ground, became unbalanced and brushed the fence when tight inside SUPER WONGCHOY. S Dye (HIGH HILL FOREST) said after being boxed, the horse, which was having its first start at Happy Valley, became very fractious and reared. He said the horse began well and raced in a forward position as anticipated, however, at no stage was he able to obtain cover and was obliged to race four wide for the majority of the race. He said at no stage of the race did HIGH HILL FOREST travel, came under pressure after the 800 Metres and failed to respond to his riding. He added after straightening because of the manner in which HIGH HILL FOREST was racing, he checked to see if the horse had bled. He was able to see blood around the horse's mouth and therefore did not persevere with HIGH HILL FOREST in the run to the line. HIGH HILL FOREST was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, HIGH HILL FOREST was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had damaged an upper front tooth. The performance of HIGH HILL FOREST was considered unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. M Cahill (LUCKY DICE) explained the horse raced greenly in the early stages and passing the winning post on the first occasion when slightly crowded for room on the inside of SUPER WONGCHOY became unbalanced, changed stride and lost its position. Whilst the Stewards did not think the riding of R Fradd (PROFIT TREASURE) in the run to the line affected the horse's finishing position and accordingly a breach of Rule 100(2) did not occur, they did however advise R Fradd he must ride all mounts out at least hands and heels to the end of the race whenever possible. SUPER WONGCHOY and METRO TRAVELLER were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 28 Nov. 2002) :
The Senior Veterinary Officer reported when he examined HIGH HILL FOREST at the stables of Trainer J Size today, it was found to be lame in the right front leg. As previously reported, before HIGH HILL FOREST can race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and is required to pass an official veterinary examination.
