Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, FIVE GRAINS became fractious, reared and had its right front leg caught over the partition. On being released from the gates, FIVE GRAINS was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. He said the horse had a laceration over the left front cannon and in his opinion was not suitable to race. Accordingly FIVE GRAINS was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. On returning to the stabling area, it was noted FIVE GRAINS was lame in its right front leg. Before FIVE GRAINS can race again, it will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and must pass an official veterinary examination. GOLDEN TACTICS was difficult to load into its starting stall and then left the gates very awkwardly. Before the horse can race again, it has to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. ZINEDINE left the gates awkwardly, shifted in abruptly and bumped FLAMENCO STAR which then shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of WELL EXPRESS. Near the 400 Metres, ILIKETOSMILE brushed the running rail. When asked about the performance of WELL EXPRESS, M Cahill said he had not been on the horse since its last run on 18 September 2002. He said on that occasion WELL EXPRESS was led to the Start by an outrider. He said an application was made for the horse to be led again this evening, but all the lead horses were being used and he rode WELL EXPRESS to the Start without assistance. He said in his opinion the horse was unusually quiet on the way to the Start and this was of concern to him, therefore on arrival at the gates, he mentioned this to the Veterinary Surgeon and sought an examination of WELL EXPRESS. No abnormalities could be detected and the horse was passed suitable to race. M Cahill said he had been instructed to lead or ride just off the pace if possible. He said WELL EXPRESS jumped well enough, it was not able to show any speed which was contrary to its last run and despite his hard riding was well beaten a long way out. Mr T W Leung, trainer of WELL EXPRESS, said the horse had trialed satisfactorily since its last run. He did think it would run well this evening, but he was concerned with the prevailing track conditions. He assured the Stewards WELL EXPRESS was fit going into this evening's race and the poor run could be attributed to the going. WELL EXPRESS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, WELL EXPRESS was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He was unable to find any abnormalities. Taking into account all the circumstances, the performance of the horse was considered by the Stewards to be unacceptable. Before WELL EXPRESS can race again, it will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and must pass an official veterinary examination. VILLAGER and PLANET RULER were sent for sampling.
