Racing Incident Report
Just as the gates opened, BOUNTIFUL bounded in the air, as a consequence lost a lot of ground. W C Marwing (DRAGON WIN) explained the horse is quite one paced and for that reason it usually travels towards the front. He said today that again was the intention, but DRAGON WIN left the gates very awkwardly, threw its head about, shifted in, bumped KASHMAC and got much further back than was the plan. He said running towards the winning post the first time, there was momentarily an opportunity for him to shift in and obtain a position with some cover in front of KASHMAC, but he elected not to take this position as he thought there was a risk of causing interference. He said after this he was quite a long way back and was obliged to race without cover. When asked about the poor run of OPTIC CHIEF, D Whyte said he had the option of riding both OPTIC CHIEF and SUPER ELITE and because of the good run of OPTIC CHIEF last start, he thought the horse would run well today. He said OPTIC CHIEF travelled only satisfactorily until about the 600 Metres, after that when put under pressure was "flat" and was very disappointing. OPTIC CHIEF was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, OPTIC CHIEF was examined. No abnormalities detected. Before OPTIC CHIEF can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. CHAMPION BOY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, CHAMPION BOY was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. SUPER ELITE and CYBER GULCH were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted BOUNTIFUL had sustained a laceration to its lower lip.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 28 Oct. 2002) :
The Club's Senior Veterinary Officer, Dr Brian Stewart, has today advised when he examined OPTIC CHIEF at the stable of Mr Y O Wong, the horse resented flexion to its right hind leg and trotted lame on that leg. OPTIC CHIEF has been referred to the stable Veterinary Surgeon for further treatment and as reported on Saturday, the horse cannot race again until it satisfactorily passes an official veterinary examination.
