Racing Incident Report
On leaving the Parade Ring, C Williams was dislodged from FLYING FAST. In the incident, FLYING FAST fell. The horse worked riderless to the Start where it was caught, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultations he decided FLYING FAST was suitable to race. On leaving the gates, SHANTOU TREASURE and FOREVER CHARMING were crowded for room between DASHING CHAMPION which shifted out slightly and BANK ON IT which on jumping shifted in away from EAGLEBROOK after being brushed by the hindquarters of that horse. EAGLEBROOK left the gates awkwardly, shifted in and brushed the hindquarters of BANK ON IT. THE ACHIEVER left the gates awkwardly and shifted out. As a consequence of this, MR HECTOR shifted ground and bumped ACME OF SURPRISE. Near the 600 Metres, FOREVER CHARMING steadied behind EAGLEBROOK. About the 400 Metres, FOREVER CHARMING became unbalanced when awkwardly placed close to the heels of EAGLEBROOK which was shifting some ground. Rounding the turn and in the Straight, MR HECTOR hung in. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in. They were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred in the Straight which cast sufficient doubt on whether DASHING CHAMPION (E Legrix) should be declared the winner of the race. They decided there was justification to have the matter resolved formally and openly at a protest/objection hearing (Rule 123). R Quinn, the rider of THE ACHIEVER, second placegetter, also lodged a protest/objection against DASHING CHAMPION being declared the winner, alleging interference to his mount in the Straight. Following the conduct of a formal hearing, the Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion that in the early part of the Straight, DASHING CHAMPION shifted out away from SHOW WIN, bumped THE ACHIEVER, carried it from the running to which it was rightfully entitled and after this continued to shift away from SHOW WIN and carried THE ACHIEVER from its rightful running. The Stewards formed the opinion that THE ACHIEVER would have finished ahead of DASHING CHAMPION had the interference which clearly took place not occurred. In forming this view, the Stewards were mindful of the short head margin between the two horses at the finish of the race. In sustaining the objection, the Stewards placed DASHING CHAMPION immediately behind THE ACHIEVER [Rule 101(2)] and accordingly amended the placings to become THE ACHIEVER 1st DASHING CHAMPION 2nd, ACME OF SURPRISE 3rd and SHOW WIN 4th. S Dye (EAGLEBROOK) explained his intention before the race had been to either lead or race outside the leader if that was to be BANK ON IT as anticipated. He said however running towards the 600 Metres when SHOW WIN and AMO improved on his outside, he took the decision it would be in the best interests of EAGLEBROOK to steady and let those horses go across him. He said immediately he steadied, EAGLEBROOK, which was racing greenly, was very reluctant to hold its position. He did acknowledge in hindsight it would have been much better for him to have ridden along hard and endeavoured to maintain a position beside BANK ON IT. He did go on to say after this incident when amongst horses EAGLEBROOK continued to race ungenerously. EAGLEBROOK was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, EAGLEBROOK was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. DASHING CHAMPION and THE ACHIEVER were sent for sampling.
