Racing Incident Report
When the gates opened, WINNING BOY stood flat-footed and lost a lot of ground. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon said WINNING BOY was lame in its left side front leg. Before WINNING BOY can race again, the horse will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. About the 1000 Metres, ARMONDO, which had a tendency to be pulling, was checked to avoid the heels of FLORAL KING (H K Yim) which shifted in when not quite clear. H K Yim was told he must exercise more care when shifting ground. For a short distance near the 400 Metres, V-CAN was held up for a run between GREEN DIAMOND and EASTERN PURPLE. In the Straight, SPRING FOUNTAIN had a tendency to shift in. As a consequence of this, at about the 200 Metres, G Schofield stopped riding, straightened and changed his whip hand. D Whyte (GREEN DIAMOND) explained in a recent trial, the horse had been ridden off the speed and that was the intention today. He said however GREEN DIAMOND jumped well, immediately started to travel and he felt in the circumstances he had little alternative but to let the horse run along in front. He went on to say GREEN DIAMOND travelled nicely in the lead and he was able to rate the horse as he wished. He said in the run to the line, GREEN DIAMOND in his opinion was racing at its top, was inclined to be getting its head down and he felt in the circumstances to have pulled the whip and hit the horse may have caused it to change legs and become momentarily unbalanced, and he was firmly of the view it was in the best interests of GREEN DIAMOND to ride it hard hands and heels to the line. GREEN DIAMOND and COLOURFUL ERA were sent for sampling. WINNING BOY and EASTERN PURPLE were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon said EASTERN PURPLE was lame in its left side hind leg. Before EASTERN PURPLE can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
The Club's Senior Veterinary Officer, Dr Brian Stewart, has today advised when he examined WINNING BOY at the stable of Mr A T Millard this morning, the left front leg of the horse was quite swollen and painful. He said it appeared as if the horse had struck into itself during running. The horse has now been referred to the Stable Veterinary Surgeon for a thorough work up and further report. As reported yesterday, before WINNING BOY can race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
