Racing Incident Report

ROMANTIC SYMPHONY was slowly away, then shifted out rather abruptly and bumped the hindquarters of COLOURFUL ERA. MASCOT TREASURE missed the start. About the 800 Metres, NEW FACE was steadied when crowded for room inside HANDBAG DRAGON which itself was racing close to the heels of TRUST ME which went across to join ALF. Also about the 800 Metres, D'OR WIN became unbalanced and blundered. The performance of NAUGHTY NAUGHTY, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it must perform satisfactorily and competitively in an official barrier trial and must pass an official veterinary examination. When questioned, B Fayd'herbe (ROMANTIC SYMPHONY) said his instructions had been to leave the gates cleanly and take up a position 3 or 4 horses off the running rail. He said ROMANTIC SYMPHONY was slowly away, it was then reluctant to stretch out and he had to pull the whip and ensure the horse kept up. After this ROMANTIC SYMPHONY did not want to stretch out with the clods which were being thrown back by runners in front and B Fayd'herbe said he took the decision to shift to the extreme outside where ROMANTIC SYMPHONY travelled a little better. He said after the 800 Metres he shifted back closer to the running rail to be beside other runners, but again ROMANTIC SYMPHONY was not travelling as he thought it should, and at about the 600 Metres he shifted to the extreme outside into where he thought was good ground, then in the Straight he took the decision to let ROMANTIC SYMPHONY drift to the outside rail where he thought the going was much better than in the centre of the track where he had been instructed to travel. The explanations submitted by B Fayd'herbe were recorded and he was told whilst the Stewards in Hong Kong would never discourage any race rider from displaying initiative, the race riding tactics he adopted today were somewhat unusual. W C Marwing (TRUST ME) said he had been instructed by the connections today because of the track conditions to ride the horse in a much more forward position than had been the practice in the past. Both he and the connections were aware that these tactics may not suit TRUST ME, however, in the circumstances it was decided the horse must be ridden forward.
