Racing Incident Report
On the way to the Start, MERIDIAN STAR kicked out and made contact with a rail. After arriving at the gates, MERIDIAN STAR was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultations he said in his opinoin MERIDIAN STAR was suitable to race. KEEN WINNER left the gates awkwardly. Just after the start, HAPPY MOMENTUM got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of MONARDS. BLACK KNIGHT was slowly away. From a difficult gate, LUCKY SIX was obliged to race wide and was unable to find any cover. About the 800 Metres, IMPRESSIONIST was shifted out abruptly to commence its run and go forward. Near the 600 Metres, SNOWSTORM shifted out from behind FORWOOD. As a consequence of this, some inconvenience was caused to MERIDIAN STAR and that horse was obliged to race a little wider. Rounding the turn and in the Straight, MONARDS had a tendency to lay out. Just on straightening, SNOWSTORM, which was starting to give ground, was checked when crowded between LIFELINE EXPRESS which shifted out to find running and MERIDIAN STAR. In the early part of the Straight, LIFELINE EXPRESS and MERIDIAN STAR raced close together. About the 300 Metres, HAPPY MOMENTUM was steadied and shifted to the inside of MONARDS to find running and go forward. When questioned, F Coetzee (LIFELINE EXPRESS) said he had spent a lot of time examining videos of the horse's runs and it was decided in the paddock today to ride the horse away from the front as there was some doubt today as to the horse getting a strong 1600 Metres. He said when BLACK KNIGHT missed the start, he felt sure he would be able to take up a position behind MONARDS, but LIFELINE EXPRESS did not respond in the early stages to his hands and heels riding and got a little further back than planned. He went on to say LIFELINE EXPRESS travelled nicely in the run, was able to shift out on straightening, but finished the race off only one paced. He said after the race he did suggest to Mr A T Millard, trainer of LIFELINE EXPRESS, that it may be in the horse's best interests when racing over middle distances or further if it was ridden back and given an opportunity on the outside of runners to close off strongly. The explanations submitted by F Coetzee were accepted. LIFELINE EXPRESS was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
