Racing Incident Report

On the way to the Start, CASH whipped around and E Legrix was dislodged. LANDLORD left the gates with its head up and just after the start was severely checked when crowded between CASH and CLASSIC DANCER which was taken out abruptly by SECOND OPINION. The occurrence in the opinion of the Stewards was accidental. When the gates opened, CLASSIC CHOICE bounded in the air. NAZAKAT II was slowly away. On jumping, TRY YOUR BEST and EMPEROR bumped. In the early part of the Straight, CLASSIC CHOICE was steadied and shifted out to obtain running and go forward. About 100 Metres out, CLASSIC CHOICE was inconvenienced by MEGA-FIGHTER which was taken out by CLASSIC DANCER. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in. They were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred over about the last 200 Metres which cast sufficient doubt on whether CLASSIC DANCER (W M Lai) should be declared 5th placegetter. They decided there was justification to have the matter resolved formally and openly at a protest/objection hearing (Rule 123). Following the conduct of a formal hearing, the Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion that by continually shifting out over about the last 200 Metres and carrying MEGA-FIGHTER from the running to which it was rightfully entitled, CLASSIC DANCER had caused interference to MEGA-FIGHTER. The Stewards formed the opinion, bearing in mind the head margin between the two horses at the finish, that MEGA-FIGHTER would have finished ahead of CLASSIC DANCER had the interference which clearly took place not occurred. They therefore placed CLASSIC DANCER behind MEGA-FIGHTER and accordingly amended the placings to be 1st NAZAKAT II, 2nd CLASSIC CHOICE, 3rd SECOND OPINION, 4th TRY YOUR BEST, 5th MEGA-FIGHTER, and 6th CLASSIC DANCER. Subsequently W M Lai (CLASSIC DANCER) was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he must stop riding and straighten. After the race, it was reported that WINNING STAR was bleeding from both nostrils.
