Racing Incident Report
EXCEPTIONAL missed the start, then just after that was disappointed for running between BRILLIANT LEADER and GLOBAL RUNNER, both of which had shifted some ground. On jumping, UPTOMEEYES bounded in the air. When questioned, D Dunn (DANCING SURPASS) said he rode the horse quietly again today as has been the practice of recent starts. He said he had hoped to begin to improve at about the 600 Metres and shift out slightly to be following HONEST STEED, but just after the 600 Metres had to steady when crowded for room between KINGDOM OF GOLD and UPTOMEEYES. He said after this he again went forward with the intention of following HONEST STEED through, but was unable to find clear running until about 100 Metres from the line where he was able to put DANCING SURPASS under full pressure. He did say when he was able to ride DANCING SURPASS out, it did not close the race off as strongly as he thought it would. The Stewards allowed Mr I W Allan, trainer of CLEVER CITATION, an opportunity of explaining the horse's improved run today when compared with its performances of recent times. Mr Allan said he had purchased CLEVER CITATION himself and had the horse trained in the United Kingdom by Sir Michael Stoute. He said CLEVER CITATION was an expensive purchase which showed ability in England and he was confident it would be successful in Hong Kong. He said CLEVER CITATION was gelded before being imported, after arriving early on it was disappointing but then on one occasion did run a good second. After that Mr Allan said CLEVER CITATION did not run as he expected it would, was disappointing to him and to the owner. He said he had to put blinkers on, taken blinkers off, changed the work patterns and tried many variations, but all without success. Before the race today, Mr Allan said he did point out to the owner if CLEVER CITATION did continue to disappoint, it might be better for the horse to be transferred to another stable. Mr Allan also pointed out S King has done very little riding for his stable and before putting S King on today he apologized to him for providing him with what he thought was going to be a poor ride. Mr Allan was unable to put forward any real explanation for the improved run today and he said the good run surprised him. After the race, it was noted that CENTURY STAR was bleeding from both nostrils.
