Racing Incident Report

INDIGENOUS left the gates awkwardly. WINNING COUNTER jumped awkwardly, threw its head about and shifted out. Just after the start, KENWOOD MELODY was crowded for room between OUR CLASS and ORIENTAL EXPRESS, both of which shifted some ground. The Stewards questioned B Marcus (CHARMING CITY) and J Egan (LUCKY WIN) regarding an incident which occurred at about the 400 Metres as CHARMING CITY improved on the inside of LUCKY WIN. The concern to the Stewards was if there was sufficient racing room for CHARMING CITY to improve as it did. The matter was adjourned to a date to be fixed. After the 100 Metres, INDIGENOUS, which was closing off strongly, shifted out, initially brushed OUR CLASS which shifted out and caused slight crowding to CLIFFHANGER which was racing tight inside ORIENTAL EXPRESS. Just after this incident, as INDIGENOUS continued to shift out and go forward, OUR CLASS was steadied to avoid its heels. When questioned, W C Marwing (CLIFFHANGER) explained before the race the trainer had pointed out because of the difficult gate he had drawn, the manner in which the horse was to be ridden would be pretty much left to the rider. W C Marwing said CLIFFHANGER jumped quickly, but shifted out abruptly away from PLENTY-PLENTY. He said had CLIFFHANGER been racing close beside PLENTY-PLENTY in the early stages, he might have endeavoured to go forward and get in, but in the circumstances he felt he had no alternative but to steady just after the start and come back behind PLENTY-PLENTY. He said after this he was obliged to race on the outside of ORIENTAL EXPRESS, covered a lot of ground rounding the first turn and was in a rearward position. He said he continued to travel wide along the Back Straight and CLIFFHANGER made the turn near the 600 Metres very awkwardly. He pointed out in the Straight CLIFFHANGER was crowded slightly for room towards the winning post, but in all the circumstances this was of little significance. Whilst the Stewards decided not to proceed with the matter, they did say to W C Marwing at the conclusion of the inquiry that his ride on CLIFFHANGER tonight had not been in the opinion of the Stewards up to his usual standard. When asked about the disappointing performance of LUCKY WIN, J Egan said he had been riding the horse on the track and this work in his opinion was satisfactory. He said LUCKY WIN has had only one trial since being in Hong Kong and after that the horse blew up rather badly. He said again on pulling up tonight LUCKY WIN was blowing hard. J Egan did say the incident near the 400 Metres seriously unbalanced LUCKY WIN and whilst the horse might not have figured in the finish but for the incident on the turn it would not in his opinion have tailed out as it did. CHARMING CITY and LUCKY WIN were sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
