Racing Incident Report
About 5:30 this afternoon Dr K L Watkins advised the Stewards he had a Racehorse Retirement and Disposal Form relating to YAN CHAI ELITE owned by Yan Chai Hospital Syndicate, a declared runner for this race. The form had been signed on 7 September 2001 but was not received by Dr Watkins until 15 September 2001. The Stewards interviewed Mr K W Lui, Trainer of the horse, in respect of the retirement form. Mr Lui said he had spoken with Mr Lee Nim Wai, David yesterday, one of the syndicate's managers and at that time Mr Lee indicated the intention was for the horse to run and indeed he asked Mr Lui what chance of success the horse might have. The Stewards were not able to ascertain whose signatures were on the retirement form and in view of the evidence from Mr Lui decided that YAN CHAI ELITE should take its place in the field. However, Mr Lui was told before entering YAN CHAI ELITE again the matter has to be resolved. After being boxed, FIELD'S WINNER became fractious and reared. GRANDSTAND left the gates very awkwardly with its head up, shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of DANELAW. CARRY-ON DREAMBOAT was slowly away. About the 1200 Metres, YAN CHAI ELITE was unbalanced when awkwardly placed close to the heels of TREASURE STAR. Near the 800 Metres, GRANDSTAND, which was pulling, became unbalanced and shifted out abruptly to avoid the heels of DANELAW. As a consequence of this, some inconvenience was caused to HIGHLIGHT and that horse was obliged to race wider. About the 300 Metres, VIKING DANCER was steadied when disappointed for running between EVERWELL FOREVER and BEAUTY FOUNTAIN which was taken out slightly by HIGHLIGHT. About the 200 Metres, TREASURE STAR changed course to avoid DANELAW. In the Straight, FIELD'S WINNER hung out, near the winning post was close to the heels of DANELAW, as a consequence the horse was not ridden out right to the line. Apprentice M W Leung (ELEGANCE) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse about midfield. He did say ELEGANCE was racing first up from quite a long spell and with blinkers for the first time tonight. He said the horse left the gates well, travelled keenly and he felt it was in the best interests of ELEGANCE to allow it to run along in front. When asked about the performance of EVERWELL FOREVER, W C Marwing said the horse was backing up reasonably quickly and tonight from an outside gate and with an anticipated lack of pace in this race, he was asked if possible to ride the horse in a forward position. He said EVERWELL FOREVER left the gates awkwardly as it frequently does, shifted ground and bumped SECOND OPINION, he then went forward to try and take up a position, did not get in, was obliged to race wide throughout without any cover and over the concluding stages EVERWELL FOREVER was very disappointing and dropped out. He went on to say the manner in which EVERWELL FOREVER raced tonight in a forward position clearly indicates the horse performs better when given a chance in its races. EVERWELL FOREVER and YAN CHAI ELITE were sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. After the race, it was noted FIELD'S WINNER was bleeding from the near nostril. The Veterinary Surgeon examined the horse and decided it was not to be classified an official bleeder.
