Racing Incident Report
MENDOZA, which was standing with its head turned slightly to the off side, left the gates awkwardly and bumped the hindquarters of OVATION. TAJASUR was slowly away. Just after the 200 Metres, KENWOOD MELODY was checked when crowded between MASTER FAY and OVATION which was taken in by CLIFFHANGER which had a tendency to shift in away from OUR CLASS (Apprentice C H Tse) which was shifting out. After considering all the circumstances, particularly the evidence of E Saint-Martin (CLIFFHANGER) who confirmed his horse had a tendency to shift away from OUR CLASS, no direct action was taken, but Apprentice C H Tse was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he must stop riding and straighten. F Coetzee (KING OF DANES) said the horse had been working well going into today's race and it was anticipated it would run well. He said KING OF DANES left the gates cleanly, travelled in front of OVATION in the early stages, but when OVATION went ahead of KING OF DANES at about the 500 Metres the horse was immediately off the bit and he knew at that stage he was not going to figure in the finish. He did go on to say although convincingly beaten, KING OF DANES kept on to the line. F Coetzee said in his opinion the handicap conditions of today's race obviously told against KING OF DANES. The Stewards deferred the declaration of Weighed-In. They were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred over about the last 200 Metres which cast sufficient doubt on whether OUR CLASS should be declared 2nd placegetter. After viewing all the available films of the incident, the Stewards did not consider it was appropriate to conduct a formal hearing. Accordingly the placings as semaphored by the Judge were confirmed. KING OF DANES was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
