Racing Incident Report
Mr Y O Wong, Trainer of WINNING TOUCH, was fined $2,000 for declaring D O'Neill to ride the horse without formally completing his engagement. It was established D O'Neill had a firm commitment for WINNING KING and J Egan was declared as the rider for WINNING TOUCH. WINNING KING missed the start. JADE RUYI jumped very awkwardly with its head up. When the gates opened, GOOD FRIENDS bounded in the air, then just after the start was awkward on the hindquarters of LIGHT PRINT. On jumping, AQUA PRINCE and COMEDY bumped. On the bends, WINNING TOUCH had a tendency to lay out. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, SINCERE AND FAITH hung out, this caused some inconvenience to SPEED WIN. When questioned, D Whyte (CONNOISSEUR'S BET) said last season the horse ran some of its races back in the field, but it appeared to race ungenerously amongst horses. Today from an outside gate, he was asked by the Trainer to ride the horse in a forward position and if possible with some cover, but because of the way the race was run he was unable to do this and in the circumstances he had no alternative but to allow the horse to run along to the front. He went on to say CONNOISSEUR'S BET travelled well throughout the race and fought on well to the line in the circumstances. The explanations put forward by D Whyte were accepted. S Dye (SPEED WIN) said he had ridden the horse in a grass gallop during the week where it settled nicely for him. Today he had been asked by the Trainer to endeavour to ride the horse about midfield. He said however SPEED WIN left the gates cleanly and quickly, he was not able to get back into a position as instructed, travelled much further forward than he wanted to and was obliged to race wider than he would have wished and at no time was he able to obtain any cover. The explanations tendered by S Dye were accepted.
