Joseph O’Brien

Background:
Joseph O’Brien is the son of master trainer Adian O’Brien. He rode his first winner on Johann Zoffany, trained by his father in 2009. In 2012, Aidan and Joseph, aged 19, became the first father-son duo to land the Derby Stakes at Epsom as trainer and jockey combination with Camelot. Joseph rode a second Derby Stakes winner, also trained by his father, in 2014 aboard Australia. O’Brien was crowned Irish Champion Jockey twice in 2012 and 2013 (rode a then record 126 winners), while other feature race wins throughout his career as a jockey came in the 2,000 Guineas (2012 Camelot), Irish Derby (2012 Camelot, 2014 Australia), Irish 2,000 Guineas (2011 Roderic O’Connor, 2012 Power, 2013 Magician), Ascot Gold Cup (2014 Leading Light), Queen Anne Stakes (2013 Declaration Of War), Dubai Sheema Classic (2013 St Nicholas Abbey) and Breeders’ Cup Turf (2011 St Nicholas Abbey). In 2016 he retired from race riding and began training. He made an immediate impact with Intricately, ridden by his younger brother Donnacha, winning the Moyglare Stud Stakes in 2016, giving him the first Group 1 winner as a trainer. Among his career highlights as a trainer are wins in Australia’s Melbourne Cup with Rekindling (2017) and Twilight Payment (2020).
