Racing Incident Report
On arrival at the Start, W M Lai expressed some concern regarding the action of PRINCE OF SUNSHINE. The Veterinary Officer reported that an examination of PRINCE OF SUNSHINE found that horse to be suitable to race and after the necessary consultations it was passed fit to start.
TELECOM TOP STAR began awkwardly, shifted out at the start and bumped the hindquarters of TWIN TURBO which became unbalanced.
From a wide barrier, CULTURAL CITY was taken across behind runners shortly after the start.
Passing the 1200 Metres, PRINCE OF SUNSHINE was steadied when crowded for room between ELECTRONIC GOSPEL and HOLY MAC which shifted out slightly. CULTURAL CITY, which was following, was hampered in consequence.
Also passing the 1200 Metres, TELECOM TOP STAR raced tight between SUPREME PROFIT and PRINCE OF SUNSHINE.
BEAUTY KING travelled three wide and without cover until after the 1200 Metres.
ELECTRONIC GOSPEL was left racing wide and without cover after the 1200 Metres.
When questioned, M Chadwick stated that he had been asked to allow CARRY THE ZEAL to obtain a handy position with cover. He said in the early stages he rode his mount along in order to ensure that he was able to clear HOLY MAC to his inside and he had hoped to obtain a position racing outside of TWIN TURBO passing the winning post on the first occasion. He said approaching this point he was racing to the outside of CRIMSON HEART and inside BEAUTY KING and he attempted to steady CARRY THE ZEAL with a view to allowing BEAUTY KING to improve to his outside and assume the position outside of CRIMSON HEART which would provide CARRY THE ZEAL with cover. He added approaching the winning post on the first occasion when he attempted to steady CARRY THE ZEAL, the horse would not relax and despite his considerable efforts it over-raced and he was not able to bring it back underneath him which resulted in it continuing to race to the outside of CRIMSON HEART. He said when the rider of BEAUTY KING desisted from continuing forward after having noted the manner in which CARRY THE ZEAL was racing, CARRY THE ZEAL continued to prove very difficult to settle and as it was not possible to obtain cover at this time, he attempted to steady CARRY THE ZEAL to sit off CRIMSON HEART in the hope that it would relax. He added despite his continuous efforts to restrain CARRY THE ZEAL, the horse proved even more difficult to steady after the 1000 Metres and improved to be racing forward of CRIMSON HEART of its own accord. He said it was not intended for CARRY THE ZEAL to be ridden in the manner in which it was tonight, however, there was nothing that he could do to prevent CARRY THE ZEAL from obtaining a leading position due to its racing manners. Mr D J Hall, the trainer of CARRY THE ZEAL, confirmed that with the step-up in distance from 1200 Metres to 1650 Metres, he felt the tempo of the race would allow CARRY THE ZEAL to obtain a more forward position and he hoped that this would be behind the leaders. He said he had stressed to Jockey Chadwick the need to obtain cover if possible as CARRY THE ZEAL had on occasions in the past been inclined to over-race. He said having in mind the manner in which the horse refused to settle tonight, it is his intention to, if possible, drop the horse back in distance.
After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon reported that PRINCE OF SUNSHINE was lame in its left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, PRINCE OF SUNSHINE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of TWIN TURBO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CRIMSON HEART, HOLY MAC and PRINCE OF SUNSHINE were sent for sampling.
