Racing Incident Report

SURE CHAMP was crowded for room at the start between DRAGON GLORY and AMBITIOUS TREASURE which shifted out.
INVESTAR WIN was slow to begin.
From the outside barrier, DEMOKLES was taken across behind runners shortly after the start.
At the 1300 Metres, INVESTAR WIN commenced to prove very difficult to settle and got its head up when being checked away from the heels of SMART PLANET.
After the 1100 Metres, INVESTAR WIN was steadied away from the heels of SMART PLANET.
Making the turn after the 1100 Metres, SURE CHAMP got its head on the side and became unbalanced when awkwardly placed inside INVESTAR WIN.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, AMBITIOUS TREASURE raced tight inside GOOD THINKER which got its head on the side and lay in slightly.
Near the 400 Metres, SMART PLANET lost its left front plate.
Rounding the Home Turn, N Callan (GOOD THINKER) momentarily lost the use of his left rein.
For the majority of the race, STEP HIGH travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned regarding his riding of LIBERAL OF MIND, M Demuro stated that, as instructed, he shifted his mount, which was having its first start in Hong Kong, across behind runners in the early stages from barrier 9. He said LIBERAL OF MIND did not show any early speed and in the middle stages became somewhat detached from the main body of the field. He said as LIBERAL OF MIND was having its first start and over 1650 Metres, he was reluctant to push the horse too early. He said after the 800 Metres he commenced to ride LIBERAL OF MIND along to make up ground, however, the horse did not improve its position on the main body of the field despite being ridden along. He added he placed the horse under further pressure making the turn after the 600 Metres, however, LIBERAL OF MIND did not quicken. He said he again placed the horse under pressure in the Straight and it was only over the concluding stages that LIBERAL OF MIND commenced to finish off the race. M Demuro was advised that his riding of LIBERAL OF MIND had come under notice and he must do more than he did on this occasion to ensure that his mounts do not get too far out of their ground. He was also reminded of his obligation under the Rules to ride his mounts out in such a manner so that they are not open to query.
When questioned, Z Purton stated that after watching the video of SMART PLANET’s most recent run, he felt that the horse was somewhat weak at the end of that 1600 Metres race and therefore tonight he wanted to ride SMART PLANET in such a manner to ensure that it was able to finish off its race. He said after the 1300 Metres he felt that GOOD THINKER, the horse he was following, may be allowed to stride forward into the outright lead, therefore he elected to allow BLOSSOM DAILY to shift in in advance of SMART PLANET rather than ride his mount along so as to ensure that if GOOD THINKER did stride forward, SMART PLANET would be able to obtain cover behind BLOSSOM DAILY. He added he was also reluctant to ride his mount along at this time as he did not want to make use of it in the early stages. He said after making the decision to allow BLOSSOM DAILY to cross, GOOD THINKER was then steadied by its rider which resulted in BLOSSOM DAILY also being steadied which caused SMART PLANET to then prove difficult to settle for a short distance approaching and passing the 1100 Metres. Z Purton’s explanation was accepted.
A veterinary inspection of INVESTAR WIN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
STEP HIGH, AMBITIOUS TREASURE and OWNERS’ GLORY were sent for sampling.
