Racing Incident Report

FLYING KEEPER, LUCKY ARMY and MACASSAR were slow to begin. Shortly after the start, GOLDEN BOY shifted out, resulting in MUSTANG being taken out onto GORGEOUS LIFE, causing both those horses to become unbalanced. After this, MUSTANG was taken across behind runners. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, MACASSAR raced tight between FLYING KEEPER and MUSTANG. Then near the 1300 Metres, MACASSAR was steadied when crowded for room between MUSTANG and FLYING KEEPER which got its head on the side and shifted out. Passing the 1300 Metres and again approaching the 1000 Metres, LUCKY ARMY got its head up on a number of occasions when being steadied away from the heels of GORGEOUS RULER. After the 1100 Metres, MUSTANG was left racing wide and without cover and after the 900 Metres was allowed to improve its position to obtain a position closer to the fence. After the 1000 Metres, ICE FIRE shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of DAILY DOUBLE. When ICE FIRE shifted out, FLYING KEEPER was steadied away from the heels of EAST OCEAN. After the 600 Metres, DAILY DOUBLE became unbalanced and lost ground after getting its head on the side and shifting out towards the heels of LUCKY ARMY. Approaching the 400 Metres, SONOFTHEWEST was checked away from the heels of GOLDEN BOY which was steadied after attempting to improve between MUSTANG and GORGEOUS LIFE where there was insufficient room. Rounding the Home Turn, MACASSAR was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FLYING KEEPER which got its head on the side and hung out. After initially laying out in the Straight, MACASSAR shifted in when struck with the whip near the 50 Metres. For this reason, D Whyte stopped riding MACASSAR and straightened his mount. When questioned, K C Leung stated that he had been instructed to lead on GOLDEN BOY if possible, however, if other runners showed superior speed, he should allow those horses to go forward and take a position behind the speed. He said after the 800 Metres when leading the race on GOLDEN BOY, he observed MUSTANG improving its position quickly to his outside. He said at this time he did not ride GOLDEN BOY along to maintain the lead, rather he allowed the horse to maintain its position to the inside of MUSTANG if possible. He said however that GOLDEN BOY did not quicken at this time and MUSTANG was able to improve its position around GOLDEN BOY into the lead. K C Leung was advised that he had erred in not making a far greater effort to maintain the lead on GOLDEN BOY at this time of the race, particularly given the tempo of the race at that time. He was also advised that, in the opinion of the Stewards, his riding of GOLDEN BOY at this time of the race had lacked judgement and in similar circumstances he would be expected to make every effort to maintain more advantageous positions. A veterinary inspection of GOLDEN BOY after the race did not show any significant findings other than the horse had sustained an abrasion wound to the left hind fetlock. MEGA CASTLE and LUCKY ARMY were sent for sampling.
