Racing Incident Report
From wide barriers, VANQUISH DELIGHT and GOLDMEN Y Y were taken across behind runners shortly after the start. When being shifted out around the heels of REDOUTE STAR at the 100 Metres, SUPER STRIKE became awkward and made contact with COMPACT YARN. Over the concluding stages, SOLAR WONDER shifted out and came into contact with HEALTHY MANNER. When questioned, T Clark stated that he was instructed to ride COMPACT YARN near the lead and after taking up a position outside REDOUTE STAR on the first turn, he attempted to steady the pace, however, COMPACT YARN tended to race very keenly with him. He said that whilst he had the opportunity to restrain and take up a position behind REDOUTE STAR approaching the 1000 Metres, COMPACT YARN was racing too keenly to achieve this and in fact made contact with the hindquarters of REDOUTE STAR as he restrained the horse. When questioned, D Whyte stated that he was instructed to be positive on REDOUTE STAR and ride the horse in a forward position. He said that after crossing runners to his inside approaching the winning post on the first occasion, REDOUTE STAR commenced to race keenly and then refused to settle when COMPACT YARN improved to be racing to its outside. He stated that on a number of occasions in the middle stages COMPACT YARN made contact with the hindquarters of REDOUTE STAR which fired up REDOUTE STAR and as a consequence the horse would not relax. He said because of this REDOUTE STAR did not finish off its race and weakened in the Straight. Following the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on HOW WONDERFUL at the request of Trainer A T Millard. The Veterinary Surgeon reported that this examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse’s trachea. A veterinary inspection of GOLDMEN Y Y and REDOUTE STAR after the race did not show any significant findings. REDOUTE STAR, HEALTHY MANNER and SOLAR WONDER were sent for sampling.
