Racing Incident Report
OCEAN WIDE began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped ACTUARIAL TALENT. HAPPY SUNDAY, which was leaning against the side of the barrier, began awkwardly. From the outside barrier, DIAMOND SUPREME was taken across behind runners in the early stages. In the early stages, OCEAN WIDE proved difficult to settle and passing the 900 Metres was steadied away from the heels of EXPLODING which at this time was taken out slightly by HAPPY SUNDAY. OCEAN WIDE continued to prove difficult to settle and near the 700 Metres was crowded for room between EXPLODING and ACTUARIAL TALENT which at this time shifted out when also proving difficult to settle and being awkwardly placed close to the heels of CHINA HERO. In the circumstances, no action was taken. Near the 800 Metres, CHINA HERO was steadied away from the heels of GAUCHO. Approaching the 600 Metres, EXPLODING was steadied and shifted in to a position behind HAPPY SUNDAY with cover. OCEAN WIDE, which was following, was hampered in consequence. A short distance later, OCEAN WIDE shifted out and bumped GRAND GENERAL, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. Throughout the middle stages of the race, GRAND GENERAL travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, M W Leung (CHOICE AND CHANCE) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a midfield position if possible and as close to the rail as he was able. He said at the start he immediately took hold of CHOICE AND CHANCE in an endeavour to follow his instructions, however, in order to obtain a position close to the rail, he was obliged to race further back than was anticipated. He said he was able to position CHOICE AND CHANCE on the rail but at the rear and approaching the 800 Metres he rode his mount along in an endeavour to improve his position. He said he commenced to improve his position inside ACTUARIAL TALENT passing the 600 Metres but was obliged to steady his mount when that horse shifted ground inwards. He said when placed under pressure CHOICE AND CHANCE hung in in the Straight but in the circumstances finished the race off quite well. Trainer T W Leung confirmed the instructions and said he hoped CHOICE AND CHANCE would be able to obtain a midfield position. He said when ridden forward in its last number of runs CHOICE AND CHANCE has not been able to finish its races off and with the anticipated speed of tonight’s race he believed it would be in the best interest of the horse not to engage in a speed battle but rather to sit behind the pace and hope that the horse would be able to finish its race off better than it has done of late. He said although CHOICE AND CHANCE was further back than he had hoped, he was satisfied that the horse was able to race close to the rail and was able to finish tonight’s race off. M W Leung was advised by restraining his mount in the manner in which he did soon after the start had resulted in the horse travelling further back than he had been instructed and in future he must make every effort to position his mount in accordance with his instructions where possible Mr Leung was advised he has an obligation to ensure that horses trained by him are ridden in a consistent manner. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of EXPLODING, F Coetzee said he was obliged to race slightly further back than he had anticipated in order to obtain cover behind HAPPY SUNDAY which he was able to do at about the 600 Metres. He said although EXPLODING made the Home Turn awkwardly, the horse was somewhat disappointing in that it failed to respond to his riding in the Straight. EXPLODING was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of EXPLODING after the race did not show any significant findings. DIAMOND SUPREME and CHINA HERO were sent for sampling.
