Racing Incident Report
WINNING REWARD began awkwardly. Despite being ridden along in the early stages, RUM SHOT failed to muster speed and then for the major part of the race travelled wide and without cover. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS, GUNG HO which was proving difficult to settle, and LIBERAL'S CHOICE were crowded for room inside CALIFORNIAMOUNTAIN (Apprentice C W Wong) which shifted in when not quite clear. Apprentice Wong was advised to exercise greater care. Approaching the 1200 Metres, WIN AGAIN, which was being ridden along, was reluctant to hold its position, then near the 1100 Metres was shifted away from the rail after being crossed by LIBERAL'S CHOICE. Near the 600 Metres, GOODY was steadied away from the heels of LIBERAL'S CHOICE which itself was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GUNG HO. Making the Home Turn and for a considerable distance after straightening, GOODY was held up and unable to improve. For some distance after straightening, GREAT ACHIEVEMENT was unable to improve between ELEGANT WIN and RUM SHOT. Approaching the 200 Metres, GUNG HO, which when giving ground was hanging in, was steadied after causing crowding to INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS. Over the concluding stages, WINNING REWARD hung in. O Doleuze (ELEGANT WIN), which was having its first start at Happy Valley, said the horse travelled only fairly throughout. He said after the 700 Metres he had to ride along in an endeavour to maintain his position behind WIN AGAIN. He said making the Home Turn ELEGANT WIN was somewhat unbalanced and in the Home Straight failed to respond as he felt it should. He did say in his opinion ELEGANT WIN was not suited by tonight's track conditions and at this stage is better suited racing at Sha Tin. D Whyte (DORDENMA) said despite the horse having cover it did travel wide throughout the race, in the Straight failed to finish the race off and was most disappointing. He did say DORDENMA in the past has performed poorly after enduring somewhat tough runs. The performance of DORDENMA, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, DORDENMA will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ELEGANT WIN was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. DORDENMA and GUNG HO were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of ELEGANT WIN and DORDENMA after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, GUNG HO was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, GUNG HO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WINNING REWARD and GREAT ACHIEVEMENT were sent for sampling.
