Racing Incident Report
RED WINE HONEY and MYTHIC STEED were slow to begin. At the 1400 Metres, BIG KAHUNA was steadied when awkwardly placed between QUALITY-QUALITY and GLOBAL WAY which was proving difficult to settle. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, FUJIAN PRINCE was awkwardly placed inside BARRACUDA which got its head on the side and shifted in away from CHAMP DRAGON. Approaching the 600 Metres, STRAIGHT VICTORY was awkwardly placed when tight inside the hindquarters of WORLD SERIES. Shortly after straightening, CHAMP DRAGON and STRAIGHT VICTORY bumped and became unbalanced when STRAIGHT VICTORY shifted to the outside BARRACUDA into clear running. WORLD SERIES, which was following, was shifted out away from the heels of CHAMP DRAGON, then near the 300 Metres was again steadied and shifted out when endeavouring to obtain clear running. Near the 300 Metres, PACKING WINNER shifted in towards the rail and became unbalanced. In the Straight, BIG KAHUNA shifted ground on a number of occasions, causing O Doleuze, its rider, to stop riding and straighten his mount. When questioned, Apprentice H W Lai (BARRACUDA) said he had been instructed to lead if possible. He said he rode BARRACUDA along vigorously in the early stages to shift across and race outside PACKING WINNER. He said when he did this he believed should he continue to go forward to try and clear PACKING WINNER, that horse would also go forward and as a consequence he would not be able to lead. He said he formed this opinion as PACKING WINNER was trained by his allocated stable and was well known to him. He said because of this he came back to race three quarters of a length behind PACKING WINNER. He said near the 1200 Metres CHAMP DRAGON which was proving difficult to settle commenced to improve its position on his outside, so he again rode BARRACUDA along as he did not wish to allow CHAMP DRAGON to cross in front of him. He said he continued to ride BARRACUDA along when CHAMP DRAGON had nearly a one length advantage on him, as a consequence he was able to maintain his position outside PACKING WINNER. He said at the 800 Metres CHAMP DRAGON did not persevere in going forward. Mr A Lee, trainer of BARRACUDA, confirmed the riding instructions issued to Apprentice Lai as did Mr C C Fung, managing part-owner of the horse. Mr Lee and Mr Fung after viewing the video said they were satisfied with the riding of Apprentice Lai, however, they understood the concerns of the Stewards. Apprentice Lai was told whilst no action would be taken at this time, his riding of BARRACUDA in the early stages was of concern to the Stewards and he should at all times ride his mount, given the circumstances of the race, in a manner which is not open to query. PACKING WINNER and RED WINE HONEY were sent for sampling.
