Racing Incident Report
While in the saddling stalls, it was noted WINNING PATTERN had loosened an upper tooth. This tooth was removed. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. DEVON FLAIR bounded in the air at the start. LIFELINE PEGASUS was slow to begin. ZONUS began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of WINNING PATTERN. Passing the 1200 Metres, SOHNA was steadied away from the heels of AMAZING CHOICE which shifted in when not properly clear. Near the 1000 Metres, FAST TRACK was steadied away from the heels of BYRON. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, WINNING PATTERN was steadied to avoid the heels of SOUND OF SILENCE (Apprentice C W Wong) which shifted in when not properly clear. Apprentice Wong was reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. In the middle stages, BRAVE COMMANDER was left racing without cover. On straightening, NOT QUITE PERFECT was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of BYRON. After the 400 Metres, SOHNA was awkwardly placed inside DEVON FLAIR and close to the heels of BRAVE COMMANDER. At the 350 Metres, Apprentice K L Chui (BRAVE COMMANDER) dropped his whip. Near the 50 Metres, DEVON FLAIR, which was giving ground, was checked when crowded for room between NOT QUITE PERFECT which was hanging in and racing tight inside FAST TRACK and ZONUS which initially was carried out by BRAVE COMMANDER and then shifted further away from that horse. In the circumstances, no action was taken. R Fradd (WINNING PATTERN) said he was instructed that if the horse began well, because of the manner in which the track was racing, he should allow the horse to travel in a forward position. He said WINNING PATTERN travelled comfortably outside the leader, however, when BRAVE COMMANDER improved around his outside on straightening, the horse was reluctant to stride out. He said after this WINNING PATTERN tired noticeably. The performance of WINNING PATTERN was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, WINNING PATTERN will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned, W M Lai (LUCKY CORDELIA) explained he had been instructed from a wide barrier to ride the horse quietly. He said when the horse raced first up for the new stable, it was ridden in a forward position, did not settle and consequently was not able to finish the race off. He said today after beginning well he took LUCKY CORDELIA back and initially was hopeful of obtaining a position behind midfield. He said it soon became apparent if he were to race in that position, he would be caught wide, he therefore elected to further steady LUCKY CORDELIA and shifted across to the rail but at the rear. He said LUCKY CORDELIA travelled comfortably throughout the race and when asked to quicken after straightening did show some response, however, at the 350 Metres was checked when disappointed for running between AMAZING CHOICE which was giving ground and CAGA BOY which shifted in. He said after this LUCKY CORDELIA kept on, but was not able to make ground on the majority of the field. Mr Y S Tsui, trainer of LUCKY CORDELIA, confirmed the riding instructions issued. He said when LUCKY CORDELIA had its first start for his stable, the riding instructions were similar to those issued today, however, on that occasion the horse was caught wide and without cover, proved difficult to settle and as a consequence travelled further forward than intended. CAGA BOY, WINNING PATTERN and LUCKY CORDELIA were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CAGA BOY, WINNING PATTERN and LUCKY CORDELIA after the race did not show any significant findings. SOHNA, MEDIC LEGION and BYRON were sent for sampling.
