Racing Incident Report

CHOICE AND CHANCE was slow to begin. Near the 900 Metres, RIVER JORDAN was steadied when crowded for room between REAL SURPRISE and SUPER PRINCE which got its head on the side and shifted in. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, LUCKY DANSKE raced ungenerously when awkwardly placed behind THE BEST and inside CHOICE AND CHANCE. In the middle stages, NATURAL FATCHOY hung out. At the 300 Metres, REAL SURPRISE was crowded for room between RIVER JORDAN and SUPER PRINCE which shifted out. For some distance approaching the 200 Metres, LUCKY DANSKE was steadied and then shifted out when unable to improve between NATURAL FATCHOY and CHOICE AND CHANCE. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner, HELENE ELEGANCE, Mr S Woods, trainer of the horse, said the manner in which the race was run today suited HELENE ELEGANCE. He said with the two leaders drawn immediately inside HELENE ELEGANCE from its wide draw, the horse was able to get a nice position by following across and consequently was able to close the race off today. When questioned regarding the poor performance of TAIJI SPIRIT, F Coetzee said in his opinion the horse's work leading into today's race whilst satisfactory was not good. He said TAIJI SPIRIT began only fairly, he rode along to go forward in the early stages and obtained a trailing position behind the pace, however, at no stage did TAIJI SPIRIT travel well and was under some pressure to maintain its position. He said in the Straight TAIJI SPIRIT failed to respond to his riding. When questioned regarding his riding after the 100 Metres, D Whyte (GAUCHO) said the horse when giving ground made an abnormal breathing noise, he therefore reduced his vigour for a short distance and when he did this, GAUCHO ceased making that breathing noise, therefore he recommenced to ride his mount out to the line. THE BEST, TAIJI SPIRIT and GAUCHO were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, THE BEST was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had bled from both nostrils. A veterinary inspection of TAIJI SPIRIT and GAUCHO after the race did not show any significant findings. HELENE ELEGANCE and RIVER JORDAN were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted HELENE ELEGANCE had lost its left front plate and SUPER PRINCE had sustained a laceration to its right hind leg.
