Racing Incident Report
When entering the track, KEEN FLYER (Apprentice K T Yeung) turned right and proceeded down the Home Straight before going to the Start. Apprentice Yeung was told in future he was to ensure he proceeded to the Start as directed. After being boxed, FOREVER FORTUNE was fractious in the stalls. Before being allowed to race again, FOREVER FORTUNE will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. As the gates opened, VITAL SPARK sat back, then began awkwardly and lost a considerable amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, VITAL SPARK will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. Near the 1000 Metres, DEMINER was momentarily steadied away from the heels of KEEN FLYER which shifted in when not quite clear. Apprentice Yeung was advised to exercise greater care. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, PROGRESSING TIMES was steadied away from the heels of ISLAND SPEED. Also at the 800 Metres, HAPPY MASTER was steadied away from the heels of CENTURY SUPER STAR. After the 400 Metres, PROGRESSING TIMES was steadied and shifted out when momentarily crowded for room between CENTURY SUPER STAR and ISLAND SPEED which itself had been held up for running and at this time shifted towards the outside of KEEN FLYER. ISLAND SPEED continued to be held up and unable to obtain clear running until after the 200 Metres. GENERAL SPEEDEE travelled in a forward position, however, was wide and without cover throughout and in the Straight failed to finish the race off. Apprentice H W Lai (SILVER WRAITH), which was racing in blinkers for the first time today, said he had been instructed to ride the horse along in the early stages in an endeavour to obtain a forward position. He said SILVER WRAITH began only fairly, he then rode along, however, was not able to obtain a position with cover. He said because of this he remained racing four wide outside the leaders. He said in the early part of the Straight SILVER WRAITH kept on fairly, however, due to its tough run gave ground over the concluding stages. Mr Y S Tsui, trainer of SILVER WRAITH, confirmed the riding instructions issued to Apprentice Lai. When questioned, G Mossé (HAPPY MASTER) explained at the 500 Metres he was aware TOY QUEST was commencing to improve its position around his outside, however, he did not shift to race on the outside of CENTURY SUPER STAR at that time as in his opinion to have done so would have required him to make use of his horse too far from the finish. He said because of this he allowed TOY QUEST to go around him, then at the 300 Metres shifted to the outside of that horse. He said he believed to have placed HAPPY MASTER under pressure at the 500 Metres would have resulted in his horse not finishing the race off in the manner in which it did. D Whyte (DEMINER) was unable to offer an explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said he became concerned that the horse would not figure in the finish shortly after straightening as when placed under pressure the horse did not respond as he felt it ought have. He said over the concluding stages DEMINER gave ground. DEMINER was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. GENERAL SPEEDEE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of DEMINER and GENERAL SPEEDEE after the race did not show any significant findings. CENTURY SUPER STAR and HAPPY MASTER were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported VITAL SPARK had bled from both nostrils.
