Racing Incident Report
Shortly after the start, FIVE GRAINS lost ground when crowded for room between ALL CHANCES which shifted out after being bumped by SUPREME GAINS and HONEY MONEY which shifted in. In the early stages, EXCELLENT BOY proved difficult to settle. At the 1300 Metres, FIVE GRAINS and LUCKY CHAMPION were checked when crowded for room inside BEST POWER which when being steadied to obtain a position with cover got its head on the side and shifted in abruptly despite the efforts of its rider. No action was taken. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, ALL CHANCES got its head on the side, hung out and shifted to a three wide position without cover. Some inconvenience was caused to CHATER SILK which was following. After the 800 Metres, LUCKY CHAMPION was steadied away from the heels of FIVE GRAINS. At the 150 Metres, HONEY MONEY when disappointed for running between EXCELLENT BOY and STAY YOUNG shifted in and bumped STAY YOUNG. When questioned regarding his riding of FIVE GRAINS in the Home Straight, Apprentice K T Yeung said he had been instructed to make his run on the outside of horses. He said because of this on straightening he shifted out to a position following CHATER SILK, however, BEST POWER prevented him from shifting further into clear running. He said shortly after this FIVE GRAINS commenced to hang in and proved difficult for him to ride. He said from about the 350 Metres he endeavoured to obtain clear running on the inside of CHATER SILK and outside ALL CHANCES and that run did materialise for a short distance at the 200 Metres. He said because of FIVE GRAINS hanging in, it proved difficult for him to take advantage of this run as he believed for him to ride his mount along would result in it shifting in across the heels of ALL CHANCES. He said after the 200 Metres he was not able to obtain clear running and FIVE GRAINS ran to the line untested. Apprentice Yeung acknowledged after viewing the films that there was an opportunity for him to improve his position behind MAVERICK STAR in the early part of the Straight, however, to have done so in his opinion would be contrary to the instructions he had been issued. Mr A T Millard, trainer of FIVE GRAINS and also allocated trainer of Apprentice Yeung, confirmed the riding instructions. He said in his opinion Apprentice Yeung through his inexperience was indecisive on this occasion which resulted in him not being able to obtain clear running to properly test FIVE GRAINS. He did say he accepted that by hanging in FIVE GRAINS was difficult for Apprentice Yeung to ride. Apprentice Yeung was severely reprimanded and told on this occasion his riding in the Home Straight had lacked the required judgement. FIVE GRAINS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FIVE GRAINS after the race did not show any significant findings. SUPREME GAINS and EXCELLENT BOY were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported ALL CHANCES had lost its left front plate.
