Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, SOLAR EMPIRE became fractious and broke through. SOLAR EMPIRE was quickly reined in and returned to the Start where it was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. Before being allowed to race again, SOLAR EMPIRE will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. GLOBAL WAY and STRAIGHT VICTORY were slow to begin. On jumping, CHATER SILK lost ground after being bumped by EXPEDITIOUS which shifted out. Also on jumping, MY BROTHER was crowded for room between WINNING REWARD and SOLAR EMPIRE which shifted out. From the outside barrier, VIKING TOR was taken across behind runners at the start. In the early stages, SOLAR EMPIRE proved difficult to settle. In the middle stages and in the early part of the Straight, JIANG JUN hung out. From the 300 Metres until after the 200 Metres, CHATER SILK was held up and unable to improve when racing between EXPEDITIOUS and PICTURE PERFECT and behind TREASURE RAIDERS. For the major part of the race, TREASURE RAIDERS travelled wide and without cover. H K Yim (COP HILL LAD) said when he had ridden the horse previously it had always been the intention to endeavour to obtain a forward position, however, due to circumstances this had not been possible in recent runs. He said today from an inside gate COP HILL LAD began well and was able to travel forward behind the leaders. F Coetzee (EXPEDITIOUS) explained at no stage of the race did the horse travel as he thought it should. He said EXPEDITIOUS travelled behind midfield, in the Back Straight was inclined to hang in and then after the 600 Metres when ridden to improve his position failed to respond. He said in the Straight he endeavoured to track the winner JIANG JUN through, however, EXPEDITIOUS did not quicken as it had at its previous start. He said EXPEDITIOUS raced "flat" today and had disappointed as its work leading into the race had been very good. When questioned, E Saint-Martin (MY BROTHER) said from a wide barrier he was instructed to ensure he had cover. He said in the early stages he allowed MY BROTHER to come back to avoid being caught wide and travelled behind WINNING REWARD and EXPEDITIOUS. He said MY BROTHER which was having its first start in Hong Kong travelled a little greenly in the run, on straightening he endeavoured to shift to the outside to make his run, however, as he did this STRAIGHT VICTORY shifted out on his inside when not properly clear, causing him to steady his mount. He said after this he shifted MY BROTHER back in and rode the horse along hands and heels to ensure it was properly balanced. He said passing the 200 Metres he commenced to improve towards a run between EXPEDITIOUS and STRAIGHT VICTORY, however, at that time EXPEDITIOUS shifted out, he therefore steadied and shifted back to the inside of that horse. He said after this he rode MY BROTHER out and the horse closed the race off nicely. E Saint-Martin was told to ensure he rode his mounts in a manner which was not open to query particularly at vital stages of the race. MY BROTHER was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MY BROTHER after the race did not show any significant findings. JIANG JUN and WINNING REWARD were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 20 March 2006)
The Senior Veterinary Officer reported that EXPEDITIOUS was this morning found to have a stiff and restricted action. Before being allowed to race again, EXPEDITIOUS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
