Racing Incident Report

CAPITALAND proved difficult to load, then once boxed was fractious and when the gates opened began awkwardly. HAWKES BAY was difficult to load. Before being allowed to race again, CAPITALAND and HAWKES BAY will both have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. PIONERO was a little slow into stride. On jumping, WINNING REWARD and BRAVE KNIGHT bumped. After the 1200 Metres, HAWKES BAY was crowded for room inside PIONERO which had been hard ridden to maintain a position inside WINNING REWARD which at this time shifted in slightly. In this incident, PIONERO was steadied. Shortly after this, HAWKES BAY, which was proving difficult to settle, was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of WINNING REWARD. DREAMS COME TRUE made the turn at the 800 Metres awkwardly and shifted out. Shortly after straightening, HAWKES BAY, which was commencing to give ground, was bumped by WINNING REWARD. At the 300 Metres, CAPITALAND was shifted out to avoid the heels of HAPPY MASTER which was bumped and carried wider by PRIME DELIGHT which itself was carried wider by BRAVE KNIGHT which shifted to the outside of HANDBAG PREMIER to obtain clear running. No action was taken. After this, PRIME DELIGHT hung out and proved difficult to ride, causing S Dye, its rider, to stop riding and straighten on two occasions. At the 100 Metres, LUCKY LAD got its head on the side and hung out. After the 100 Metres, GRAND FIGHTER, which was giving ground, was bumped by PIONERO which shifted towards the inside of GOLD STRIKER to obtain clear running. After this, PIONERO shifted out and was steadied away from the heels of GOLD STRIKER. In the Straight, CHATER SILK hung out. Because of this, C Munce, its rider, changed the whip into his left hand after the 200 Metres. Throughout the race, LUCKY LAD raced wide and without cover. When questioned, C Brown (WINNING REWARD) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in about midfield if possible and with the rail being in the C position today to ensure he made his run wider on the track to avoid being held up. He said in accordance with his instructions, in the early stages he made sure WINNING REWARD went forward, as he was endeavouring to obtain a position with cover near the 1200 Metres, he had runners to his inside and therefore was not able to shift in. He said he did consider riding WINNING REWARD forward at this time to clear these runners and obtain a position on the fence inside GOLD STRIKER. He said however having in mind his instructions to make his run outside horses in the Straight, he instead elected to allow GOLD STRIKER to cross from his outside and then remain racing one horse off the fence in what was slightly further forward of midfield. C Brown was told his explanation would be reported. HAWKES BAY and DREAMS COME TRUE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of HAWKES BAY and DREAMS COME TRUE after the race did not show any significant findings. PRIME DELIGHT was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, PRIME DELIGHT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, PRIME DELIGHT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GOLD STRIKER and WINNING REWARD were sent for sampling.
