Racing Incident Report

LUCKY BIRD was slow to begin and lost a considerable amount of ground. BEST CHOICE began awkwardly, became unbalanced, lost ground and as a consequence got well back. On jumping, SPEED WINNER blundered, shifted out and bumped KING OF TURBOT. After this, despite being hard ridden SPEED WINNER failed to muster speed. After the 1700 Metres, DEFLECT was steadied to shift in to a position behind SPEED OF LIGHT. Near the 600 Metres, DONGGUAN VICTORY became unbalanced after being bumped by EL PRADO STAR which at this time got its head on the side and shifted in away from HAPPY HEROES. At the 500 Metres, SPEED OF LIGHT was steadied when disappointed for running between DONGGUAN VICTORY and ONE EYE JACK which at this time shifted out. Prior to straightening, SPEED OF LIGHT was again steadied and shifted in away from EL PRADO STAR which commenced to give ground. In the early part of the Straight, DEFLECT was held up and unable to obtain clear running and near the 350 Metres was steadied and shifted to the inside of SPEED OF LIGHT to go forward. LUCKY BIRD, which was following DEFLECT, was also unable to obtain clear running for some distance after straightening, near the 350 Metres was shifted out to go forward, however continued to have difficulty obtaining clear running and near the 100 Metres was steadied when disappointed for running between SPEED WINNER and HAPPY HEROES which was giving ground. Also in the early part of the Straight, SPEED OF LIGHT was unable to obtain clear running and after the 200 Metres again had some difficulty obtaining clear running between DONGGUAN VICTORY and FORTUNE GOLD. Throughout the race, from the outside barrier, HAPPY HEROES travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the performance of BEST CHOICE, S Dye said at no stage did the horse travel comfortably. He said in the middle stages he continually rode BEST CHOICE along to try and maintain a position behind DONGGUAN VICTORY which he believed would carry him forward into the race. He said in the Straight when being ridden out BEST CHOICE hung in and did not respond to his riding. KING OF TURBOT was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, KING OF TURBOT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had bled from both nostrils. BEST CHOICE, DEFLECT and RENA'S WUNDERBAR were sent for sampling.
