Racing Incident Report
Passing the winning post on the first occasion, AMBITIOUS LEADER, which was being eased to allow MURCIELAGO (C Brown) to cross, got its head up when MURCIELAGO shifted in when not properly clear. C Brown was told to ensure he was properly clear of other runners before shifting ground. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, NATURAL MODEL shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of AMBITIOUS LEADER after being bumped by JUST IN TIME. At the 1200 Metres, AMBITIOUS LEADER, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up. In the middle stages and making the Home Turn, FORTUNE LAD hung out. For some distance after straightening, CAPABEL had difficulty obtaining clear running between NATURAL MODEL and AMBITIOUS LEADER. Throughout the race, JUST IN TIME, which had drawn the outside barrier, raced wide and without cover. G Mossé (BAUHINIA) said he had been instructed from a wide barrier to ride the horse in a rearward position. He said it was felt if the horse was ridden to go forward it would not have sufficient speed to cross runners to its inside. He said in accordance with those instructions on jumping he immediately steadied his mount and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail but at the rear where BAUHINIA travelled comfortably. He said after the 700 Metres FORTUNE LAD shifted away from the rail and he considered improving inside that runner, however, FORTUNE LAD shortly afterwards shifted back to the fence. He said at the 500 Metres he commenced to improve inside FORTUNE LAD and BAUHINIA responded fairly to his riding. He said for some distance after straightening he was awkwardly placed close to the heels of WE'RE BUDDIES which drifted wider on the track. He said after the 200 Metres when he obtained clear running BAUHINIA closed the race off nicely. Mr S Woods, trainer of BAUHINIA, confirmed the riding instructions issued to G Mossé. He said BAUHINIA does not possess natural gate speed and from a wide barrier with the makeup of tonight's field he believed BAUHINIA if ridden forward would be obliged to race wide. He said despite having led at its only win BAUHINIA had subsequently proved itself to be adaptable and be able to quicken when ridden quietly in the early stages. He did point out had BAUHINIA obtained uninterrupted running in the Straight it would have figured more prominently. Mr Woods did say depending on the pace of races BAUHINIA when racing over a distance further than the 1650 Metres of tonight may be ridden in a forward position. BAUHINIA and MURCIELAGO were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of BAUHINIA and MURCIELAGO after the race did not show any significant findings. KING OF SPADES and KID GALAXY were sent for sampling.
