Racing Incident Report
CALIFORNIA HEART which after being boxed became fractious, began awkwardly, bumped the inside gate of its stall, then shifted further and bumped the hindquarters of SUPER PRINCE. From the outside gate, SHARE THE FUN was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners. Making the first turn, SNIPPEDYDOODA hung out. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, DETERMINATION got its head on the side and hung in. Prior to straightening, SHARE THE FUN was momentarily held up and unable to improve between BYRON and DETERMINATION. In the early part of the Straight, MAGIC TEMPLE, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was shifted to the outside of DOUBLE HAPPINESS. Also in the early part of the Straight, LUCKY CHAMPION was awkwardly placed outside the heels of SEASONS TREASURE. After the 200 Metres, MAGIC TEMPLE was carried wider by SUPER PRINCE (Apprentice C W Wong) which while being ridden along shifted out. Apprentice Wong was told in similar circumstances he should stop riding and straighten his mount. Over the concluding stages, SING FAY FAY hung out. Near the winning post, SEASONS TREASURE got its head on the side and hung in. F Coetzee (CALIFORNIA HEART) said he had been instructed to lead on the horse. He said after beginning badly he then rode CALIFORNIA HEART along to carry out his instructions. He said SUPER PRINCE which had drawn inside him was being hard ridden to maintain a forward position and because of this to cross that horse near the 1400 Metres he was required to make more use of CALIFORNIA HEART than he hoped. He said because of the manner in which he rode CALIFORNIA HEART to clear SUPER PRINCE the horse was in full momentum and as he had explained previously Mr A S Cruz, trainer of CALIFORNIA HEART, does not wish to see his horses restrained but rather be allowed to stride when racing on the All Weather Track. He said because of this he did not attempt to steady CALIFORNIA HEART but rather have the horse relax underneath him. He said as today was CALIFORNIA HEART's first start over 1650 Metres the horse did not relax for him as he would have wished and he was aware that the tempo he set in the first half of the race would make it difficult for the horse to figure in the finish of today's race. He said the pace of the first half of the race accounted for the performance of CALIFORNIA HEART. CALIFORNIA HEART was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA HEART after the race did not show any significant findings. SMART HORSE and BYRON were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported LUCKY HANDS had bled from both nostrils.
