Racing Incident Report
As the gates opened, ONLY YOU sat back, was slow to begin and lost a considerable amount of ground. TURF GOLD began awkwardly, bounded in the air and lost ground, then making the turn near the 1000 Metres hung out. FETCHER was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards got its head on the side, shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of WYNDAM PLENTY which shifted out after being bumped by EVEREST. Near the 800 Metres, FETCHER raced tight inside TURF GOLD which got its head on the side and hung in. In the middle stages, WYNDAM PLENTY proved difficult to settle when initially close to the heels of SIAMERIC TE SPECSO, then near the 700 Metres WYNDAM PLENTY shifted out and caused some inconvenience to SUPREME STAR. Near the 500 Metres, ONLY YOU, which was unable to improve between NAUGHTY BOY and TURF GOLD, was steadied and shifted in to obtain clear running. ONLY YOU then became awkwardly placed when unable to obtain clear running making the Home Turn between EVEREST and FETCHER. In the Straight, SUPERB hung out and proved difficult to ride. This caused some inconvenience to FUNTRAP which was carried wider. G Schofield (SOUTHERN LIGHT) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in 4th or 5th position because at its last start when leading the horse had failed to close the race off. He said SOUTHERN LIGHT began well, he allowed horses on his inside to go forward of him in the hope of obtaining a position with cover. He said entering the Back Straight he was racing three wide behind FUNTRAP and outside WYNDAM PLENTY which was proving difficult to settle, he therefore elected to steady and come back behind WYNDAM PLENTY and obtain a position closer to the rail although slightly further back than intended. He said when WYNDAM PLENTY shifted out near the 600 Metres he immediately rode along to improve on the inside of that horse, however, in the Straight SOUTHERN LIGHT failed to finish the race off. He said in his opinion SOUTHERN LIGHT failed to handle tonight's track conditions. S Dye (EVEREST), which performed poorly, said the horse as is usual was a little restricted in its action during the preliminary. He said because of this he gave EVEREST a good warm up behind the barriers. He said when the gates opened EVEREST began only fairly and then at no stage of the race stretched out as he thought it should. He said in the early part of the Straight he placed EVEREST under pressure, however, when it failed to respond and was then well beaten over the concluding stages, he did not ride the horse out to the end of the race. EVEREST was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of EVEREST after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of EVEREST was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, EVEREST will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SIAMERIC TE SPECSO and SUPERB were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 19 May 2005)
EVEREST, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. EVEREST was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C Fownes this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to have a stiff and restricted hind limb action. As previously advised, EVEREST will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
