Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the Start, B Prebble (COSMO SUCCESS) expressed concern over the horse's action. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon, trotted up and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. DON RICARDO was slow to begin and then trailed the field throughout. Near the winning post the first time, FORTUNE SMILES was steadied away from the heels of DASHING CHAMPION (Apprentice C K Tong) which shifted in when not properly clear. Apprentice Tong was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. After this incident, FORTUNE SMILES shifted out and bumped FLYING BISHOP on several occasions. After the 1000 Metres, KIDDYLAND got its head up when racing tight inside STRONG SUN. FIGHTING MASCOT, which was racing outside KIDDYLAND, was steadied away from that horse's hindquarters. In the early part of the Straight, STRONG SUN, which was being shifted out to obtain running, got its head on the side and hung in. Near the 200 Metres, NILOMETER became unbalanced when improving into a narrow run between MONEY STRONG and DASHING CHAMPION which at this time shifted in slightly. Over the concluding stages, HAIL THE STORM hung out and proved difficult to ride. Apprentice H W Lai (FLYING BISHOP) said he was instructed to have the horse begin well and attempt to obtain a position about 2nd or 3rd. Mr P F Yiu, trainer of FLYING BISHOP, confirmed the instructions issued to Apprentice Lai. He said previously FLYING BISHOP's better runs at Happy Valley are when it was ridden more prominently than it was at Sha Tin. He said also in his opinion tonight's track suited horses being ridden in a more forward position. When questioned, B Prebble said approaching the winning post on the first occasion he commenced to shift towards a position behind STRONG SUN which would have had him racing with cover one off the fence. He said as he did this riders who were behind him to his inside called loudly to allow him to know that they were improving their positions. He said as he could not properly see them and because of the manner they were calling he felt to have shifted in might cause interference to them and he therefore did not shift to be behind STRONG SUN. He said as a consequence of this COSMO SUCCESS travelled three wide and without cover. He said in the Straight the horse did not appear normal in its action. B Prebble was told his explanation would be reported, but he was to at all times ensure he obtained favourable positions which were available to him. STRONG SUN and DON RICARDO were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of STRONG SUN and DON RICARDO after the race did not show any significant findings. NILOMETER and COME SEE YOU were sent for sampling.
