Racing Incident Report

SPOKESMAN was slow to begin and was then checked when crowded for room between GOOD FRIENDS and LUCKY ENCOUNTER which on jumping shifted out away from JUST VICTORY which also shifted out. WINNING WAYS was slow to begin. OH GREAT began awkwardly, shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of WE'RE BUDDIES. For some distance after passing the winning post on the first occasion, WINNING WAYS raced awkwardly and was inclined to lay out and as a result came into contact on a number of occasions with the hindquarters of SPOKESMAN. Near the 1300 Metres, WINNING WAYS was checked after bumping the hindquarters of SPOKESMAN which was turned in and commenced to shift ground. As this occurred, GOOD FRIENDS was carried in slightly by DASH FOR VICTORIES. Near the 1200 Metres, LA MERVEILLE and CRESCENDO were crowded for room inside SOARING ANGEL which had been hard ridden to go forward after beginning only fairly and at this time was carried in slightly by TORI TOP which shifted ground momentarily. As a result of this crowding, LA MERVEILLE was not able to maintain its position and lost ground. WE'RE BUDDIES, which was following LA MERVEILLE, was checked to avoid the heels of that runner. As the Stewards did not believe responsibility for this incident lay with one rider, no action was taken. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, SPOKESMAN got its head on the side, shifted out and was checked away from the heels of WE'RE BUDDIES. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, LA MERVEILLE hung in. Prior to straightening, CRESCENDO, which was giving ground, was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of SPOKESMAN. Throughout the race, JUST VICTORY raced three wide and without cover. Apprentice P H Lo (LA MERVEILLE) explained after his mount was crowded for room near the 1200 Metres it became unbalanced and lost ground. He said LA MERVEILLE was then reluctant to hold its position inside LUCKY ENCOUNTER and consequently got back to be racing slightly behind midfield. SPOKESMAN and CRESCENDO were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SPOKESMAN after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, CRESCENDO was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. The performance of CRESCENDO, which started to give ground at the 600 Metres and finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, CRESCENDO will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After the race, the Veterinary Officer said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucopus in the trachea of DASH FOR VICTORIES. Before being allowed to race again, DASH FOR VICTORIES will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SOARING ANGEL and OH GREAT were sent for sampling.
