Racing Incident Report
Prior to the running of Race 3, HAPPY KID was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had shifted its left front plate, sustained a puncture wound to the sole of the foot and as such was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of HAPPY KID. Before being allowed to race again, HAPPY KID will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BALL OF FIRE and KING OF SPADES were slow to begin. Near the 1000 Metres, GLOBE RIVER was bumped by WAFER KING which when proving difficult to settle shifted out away from the heels of PURPLE GOLD. KING OF SPADES, which was following, was steadied away from the heels of WAFER KING. Near the 800 Metres, OLIVE OR TWIST was steadied to avoid the heels of PERSEVERANCE (Apprentice C K Tong) which commenced to shift in when not properly clear. PERSEVERANCE was then straightened and ridden along to clear OLIVE OR TWIST before crossing to the rail. CHINOOK and PURPLE GOLD, which were following OLIVE OR TWIST, were checked in consequence. Apprentice Tong was told to ensure he is properly clear of other runners before shifting ground. Prior to straightening, GLOBE RIVER was steadied when crowded for room between WAFER KING which was improving around its outside and MAGICAL LOT which at this time shifted to the outside of TELECOM TYCOON to improve. PERSEVERANCE made the Home Turn awkwardly. Over the concluding stages, KING OF SPADES was awkwardly placed close to the heels of OLIVE OR TWIST and because of this was not ridden out to the line as it normally would be. C Soumillon (OLIVE OR TWIST) said the intention had been to ride the horse in a forward position if it began well, however, he did not want to race "head and head" in the lead with the runner on his outside. He said because of this entering the Back Straight when he became aware PERSEVERANCE which was racing to his outside was proving difficult to settle for its rider and as his mount was also proving difficult to settle with that runner to his outside, he elected to steady his mount in the hope of coming back to race about a length behind PERSEVERANCE but hold the rail. He said it was always his intention to hold the rail as the horse in the past had shown a likeness for that position and he felt in the Straight with the rail in the C position clear running would present itself. He said near the 800 Metres when his mount was crowded for room inside PERSEVERANCE, it was not possible for him to hold that horse in a one wide position, as a result he steadied and took a trailing position. Mr L Ho, the trainer of PERSEVERANCE, which was stepping up in distance tonight and also having its first start at Happy Valley, said in his opinion the horse's improved performance could be attributed to it being able to obtain an unchallenged lead in the middle stages and run the race at a tempo to suit itself. PURPLE GOLD, PERSEVERANCE and OLIVE OR TWIST were sent for sampling.
