Racing Incident Report
TRAVEL LEADER bounded in the air at the start and shortly afterwards was bumped on the hindquarters by SUPER IDEAL which began awkwardly and shifted in. TIRAMISU began awkwardly, shifted in and caused crowding on its inside to OSCAR STAR and LUCKY LAD which also shifted out. WINNING CAT began awkwardly. MODERN PROSPECT and TOY QUEST were slow to begin. ARMONDO, which was standing badly and leaning against the side of its stall, was slow to begin and shortly afterwards was steadied away from the heels of INSIDE MAIL which shifted in. As a consequence of this, ARMONDO got well back. At the 800 Metres, ARMONDO was steadied when awkwardly placed between INSIDE MAIL and ORIENTAL which shifted in slightly. TOY QUEST, which was following, was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of ARMONDO. On straightening, WINNING CAT was steadied and shifted to the outside of CALIFORNIA BISHOP. Near the 200 Metres, TOY QUEST was steadied away from the heels of EVER SUCCESS which shifted out away from WINNING CAT which itself was shifting out. For a considerable distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, SUPER IDEAL raced in an awkward position between LUCKY LAD and TRAVEL LEADER. Over the concluding stages, OSCAR STAR shifted out and WINNING CAT shifted in. Also over the concluding stages, TRAVEL LEADER, which was giving ground, was steadied when inside the heels of TIRAMISU. F Coetzee (CALIFORNIA BISHOP) said the intention had been to ride the horse behind the lead with cover if possible. He said CALIFORNIA BISHOP was fractious in the barriers, he then went forward in the early stages but there were a number of runners improving on his inside and it soon became apparent that he would not be able to find a position with cover behind the lead. He said he allowed CALIFORNIA BISHOP to continue going forward, after the 1200 Metres commenced to shift in in an endeavour to cross and race outside OSCAR STAR in the lead. He said as he did this TRAVEL LEADER maintained its position on the inside and held him in a three wide position without cover. He said in the Straight CALIFORNIA BISHOP did not respond to his riding and gave ground. He was unable to offer any explanation for the horse's performance other than to say in his opinion the horse at this stage of its preparation may be better suited in races of distances further than the 1600 Metres of today. CALIFORNIA BISHOP was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA BISHOP after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of CALIFORNIA BISHOP was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CALIFORNIA BISHOP will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. OSCAR STAR and WINNING CAT were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 3 January 2005)
INSIDE MAIL was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon at the stables of Trainer D A Hayes yesterday morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the left hind leg. Before being allowed to race again, INSIDE MAIL will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
