Racing Incident Report
When declarations were taken for this race, B Prebble was declared as the rider of WONDERFUL BOY. Shortly after declarations, B Prebble advised Trainer K W Lui he would be overweight and unable to fulfil this engagement. As such, the Stewards permitted G Schofield to be substituted as the rider of WONDERFUL BOY. B Prebble was fined $2,000 for accepting this ride when overweight. HANDBAG FORTUNE was slow to begin. On jumping, WIN HUNTER shifted in and bumped BULLISH KID. CHOICE AND CHANCE began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped HORACE'S HORSE. Shortly after the start, GOOD TO GREAT became unbalanced and lost ground after being bumped by NEW MILESTONE which shifted in. Making the turn near the 600 Metres, HORACE'S HORSE became unbalanced and bumped the running rail when tight inside NEW MILESTONE (A Delpech) which when crossing to lead steadied. HANDBAG FORTUNE, which was following, was hampered in consequence, shifted out and caused inconvenience to CHOICE AND CHANCE. A Delpech was advised against steadying the pace when crossing. Making the turn after the 600 Metres, GOOD TO GREAT, which was racing greenly, became unbalanced and lost its position when awkwardly placed between SUGAR AND SWEET and CHOICE AND CHANCE. In the middle stages, BULLISH KID hung out. Near the 200 Metres, MOUNTAIN TREASURE, which was beginning to close the race off, was steadied and shifted to the inside of the heels of WIN HUNTER. Throughout the race, WONDERFUL BOY raced greenly. G Mossé (MURCIELAGO) said he had been instructed to ensure he rode the horse in a forward position. He said MURCIELAGO did not begin well, he immediately rode it along vigorously to make up ground and obtain a position outside the leader but three wide. He said in the Straight MURCIELAGO failed to run on as expected and in his opinion this might have been because of the manner he had to ride it in the early stages to follow his instructions. When questioned, O Doleuze (SUGAR AND SWEET) said from a wide barrier he was instructed not to ride the horse to go forward in the early stages, however, he should if possible ensure the horse was properly balanced to enable it to close the race off. He said it had been pointed out to him at its last start SUGAR AND SWEET over the course and distance from an awkward barrier had contested the lead and failed to finish its race off and also that on previous occasions SUGAR AND SWEET had hung in when under pressure. He said after beginning well he did not ride SUGAR AND SWEET along in the early stages, however, he was not able to immediately shift across as he was not clear of MURCIELAGO which was being hard ridden to improve on his inside. He said when that horse continued on forward of him near the 600 Metres, he shifted in to a position with cover, however, was behind midfield. He said shortly after this MURCIELAGO continued on and shifted in to a three wide position which again left him racing wide and without cover, then in the Straight SUGAR AND SWEET did not quicken as was hoped. Mr T K Ng, trainer of the horse, confirmed the instructions given to O Doleuze and added that he was disappointed with the manner in which the horse had raced when being ridden forward at its last start. He said prior to racing in Hong Kong SUGAR AND SWEET had raced with success on several occasions when being ridden quietly and it was felt it would be in the horse's best interest to have it ridden in this manner tonight. He said SUGAR AND SWEET was slightly further back than he had hoped during the run, however, he felt this was because of the wide draw. Mr Ng was told in similar circumstances he should advise the Stewards of any significant change in any intended riding tactics. SUGAR AND SWEET was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, SUGAR AND SWEET was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SUGAR AND SWEET will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. MOUNTAIN TREASURE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, MOUNTAIN TREASURE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, MOUNTAIN TREASURE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. HANDBAG FORTUNE, NEW MILESTONE and BULLISH KID were sent for sampling.
